What exactly IS "low sugar?"

  • I have a question for you. I want to get some tomato pasta sauce for some dishes I'll be making, but I don't know exactly what "low sugar" is. The regular kind is 7g Sugar per 1/2 cup, and I typically only use 1/4 cup, so that's 3.5g Sugar. Is that "low sugar?"

Or are we not supposed to have tomato sauce at all on Ph1 because of the sugar content? I can't remember.

Anyone have a recipe for a sugar-free tomato sauce?
  • Tomato sauce is fine during phase 1. What you want to try to do is find sauce that has no added sugar in the list of ingredients. I have to admit that the Ragu that I normally use has a little added sugar. It is 9 grams a half cup and it hasn't caused me any problems. I've tried different no sugar added sauces but Brian doesn't like them as well.
  • i found a pasta sauce that has no sugar added in the ingredients as well.
the weird thing is none of the major brands had that.
i had to go to the generic kroger brand of private selection to find it.
if somone doesn't like the sweetness *adds splenda*
  • I thought I already replied but can't find it...

we bought the new Hunts No Sugar Added-with more italian seasoning in a can. it was really good and only 3 grams of sugar per 1/2 cup, plus it's only about a dollar a can
  • If there is no sugar in the ingredient list, the sauce is just fine. The sugar listed in the nutritional breakdown is fructose, fruit sugar, which is just fine.
  • My favorite Brand is Barilla. I love their Tomato Basil Marinara Sauce. If I happen to get another brand, I just add a packet of splenda to it. I find it brightntens up the flavors without adding too much sweetness.
  • I have found a Ragu Light with no added sugar. I have only been able to find it at Wal-mart though.
  • Thanks, wannaB! I'll check Wal-mart and see if I can find a no sugar added Ragu Light!
  • You're welcome and good luck!
