  • Haha, I'm giving you my hypothetical budget for the summer. SO, if you were a broke college student like me, and you only have $10 to spend at the supermarket each week, providing that you ONLY have to feed yourself, WHAT WOULD YOU BUY??? (your must haves or staple foods!) Ideally, something that keeps you full and is cheap, would be great! (This is, $10 for the entire week, to get ALL YOUR MEALS, BREAKFAST, LUNCH AND DINNER FOR 7 DAYS/ WEEK!)

PLEASE, i need all the help I could get because I need to maximize my food intake while minimizing my summer budget!!!! I'd love to hear from every single one of you! (it might not necessarily be $10 a week, but thats how much i roughly calculated my weekly expenditure to be!)
  • Pinto beans ~
  • Bread and Tuna. Some veggies and Fruit. Can't get much for 10$

You could get stuff that will cost more then 10$ a week ( at first), but will last you a while and work out to probably 10$ a week.
Maybe a bag of oatmeal - that will last you a while and it is cheap.
A Big bag of whole wheat pasta.
    Box of crackers.
Jar of Peanut Butter (or something of the sort) - maybe cream cheese or whatever you like.
Cheese, Deli Meat, anything to make a sandwitch out of.

If you can, shop at Costco. I get lots of stuff that is cheaper and you get more of it.
  • Oatmeal, ff cottage cheese, ff yogurt and frozen fruit. I could eat that everyday for a while.
  • I'd go with

    oats or oatmeal
lots & lots of fresh fruits & veggies (summertime prices are pretty low)
chicken or beans (some type of protein)
    spices (got to add flavor)
some type of dairy (yogurt, milk, cottage cheese)

I agree that if you buy somethings like peanut butter, etc. they will last you for more than just the one week.
  • black beans, frozen veggies, deli meat, whole wheat pitas or mini bagels, celery + peanut butter, 99% FF microwave popcorn.
  • Rice
    Oats
I buy all my fruits and veggies from a farmer's market, so they're WAY cheaper than at the grocery store, 'cause they're mostly local - that's a really good way to save money.
If you have a yard you can grow some of your own vegetables, too - if you don't have a yard you can at least grow a few herbs in your kitchen - it's a cheap way to spice up your meals.
    Bulk beans
  • bread - $2
    peanut butter - $2
    milk - $2
    apples ~ $2 for 6
oatmeal - $2 (real oats, not instant)
  • I'd definitely go for the oatmeal and the milk. A half gallon. And bread and tuna. Swipe some lite mayo packets from a fast food restaurant and make tuna salad

Lucky's list sounds great. You have protein, calcium, whole grains and some fruit. For veggies, if you can stand the taste, pick up some canned stuff. I like canned carrots, peas, corn and green beans.
  • produce alone costs me around $10 (broccoli $3.50, lettuce $3.50, 5 oranges $2, celery $2)

The only thing I might be able to have is bread and oatmeal and a few veggies (Yeah, I do have pb and one jar will last me quite a while!)

YES! THat is the life of a college student!!!! I do take the little samples !!
  • Eggs
You can cook them many different ways
and invite your self to other peoples hosue for dinner. lol
When I went to College, I had one meal ticket a day
I had a meat and veggie and the rest of the value I bought hard boil eggs and I had a loaf of bread in my room and ate that for b/fast and lunch etc.
My friend used to put ketcup and some spices in hot water - tomato soup
I also took lemon slices - lemon aide
    sandi
  • My husband does this every week! He is a truck driver, and on the road with no real way too cook his food and trying to lose weight... so he spends about $10 a week on food! (Unless he splurges and goes to Subway, but he rarely does that.)

His shopping list is as follows

    Whole Wheat Bread
Tuna (Several Cans) (he uses mayonaise packets from gas stations to make sandwhiches, only 1/2 a packet for a whole can)
    Canned Vegetables (Usually green beans)
    A Bag of Baby Carrots
    A Jar of Applesauce

He's lost 80 pounds this way. It's not the most healthy, but he definately has learned to eat on a lot less.
  • Quote: Eggs
    Eggs!

    ~smacking myself on the forehead~

Of course! Why didn't I think of that?

Scrambled, hard boiled (get some lowfat mayo and make deviled eggs) plus you can add chopped egg to tuna salad to bulk it up a little bit.

    Great suggestion

Yep, and see, even MtaTJac has that suggestion, nabbing condiment packets from gas stations
