Legumes

  • I am here again on Phase I so hello to everyone. I've started buying canned Butter beans and roman beans. The butter beans are great, but is there a limit on how much to eat? I do remember reading somewhere that we can eat as much as we choose of some foods. Does this include legumes?

    Thanks for the response.

  • The recommendation is to start with 1/3 to 1/2 cup daily and if you are still losing you can increase the amounts. What do butter beans and roman beans taste like? Anything like great northern beans do?
  • Bean taste
I am so glad you replied. I sure did overdo the beans. I better rad my book again.

The taste? I only know baked beans to compare. Butter beans are large, almost as large as a quarter. The texture is similar to baked beans, firm, but soft. They have a mild flavor. I thought they were great. Too bad I ate half the can.

By the way, down here the Goya brand is the best brand, so I'm told.
  • butter beans are listed as good in my Good Fats/Good Carbs book. The serving size is shown as a half cup. If you haven't been eating high fiber foods much, you may find that your body needs time to adjust or you will have a real problem with gas. There are more calories in beans than in other veggies but I can usually do fine with more than one serving of beans unless I am eating a lot of high calorie stuff like cheese with them. Often I will combine a starchie veggie like beans with a lighter veggie like broccoli or asparagus. The carbs in the beans are helpful in phase 1.
