Jumping back on the low carb wagon

  • Well, I haven't been here in sooooooooooo long! I've been so busy with various jobs/activities/responsibilities that I fell off of the wagon. I have to start all over again.
Also, in March, I was diagnosed with PCOS and I *need* to lose this weight! I'm doing so much better since going on Metformin, but the weight has to go too for me to get rid of some of the problems associated with PCO.
My dh is a true carb addict and has gained so much weight over the past year that it scares me. He'd been doing very well low carbing and felt better.
Anyway.. may this prodigal wiggle back into the group. I've missed y'all! PAHLEASE?

  • Hi Dixi!!

Glad you found your way back to us, and sorry to hear about the PCOS.

Lots of new faces and a few of the old are still here.

If I remember correctly you were doing the Mayo Clinic plan. Are you going to continue that, or are you going with one of the other low-carb plans??

    Welcome Back
    Debbie
  • Hi Dixi,
I am new here too and also a PCOS sufferer. Been low carb for 3 weeks or so after much research. Will see a gyn endocrinologist in Sept who I hope will continue to straighten me out.

Good Luck to you, sorry about the diagnosis.

  • Thanks
Debkay: Yes, this is me.. the Mayo Clinic dieter
We're going to do a modified Mayo Clinic diet. We
have just put up a ton of squash and corn.. someone
has to eat that stuff! hehe..
I have been drinking at least three to four liters of
water a day. I don't even want anything else to drink
anymore.. sooo.. that's going to make the transition
    back easier.
Thank you for the welcome back! I'm going to officially
    start over next Monday!

1fralick: Thank you. I bet you feel better already from
low carbing even for three weeks! I know I do. It took
me a long time to find a doctor that would listen to me.
I hope that you get a very good doctor!
We're going the pregnancy route.. trying to conceive
with PCOS is difficult to say the least, but God is good
and if it is meant to be.. it will happen!
I've been on Metformin/Glucophage for four months now
and I feel better than I have in ten years. I have energy
again and my mind is clearer. I don't know how many others
with PCOS have those problems, but I know that when I was
on the Met/Glucophage for a few weeks.. it made a huge
difference. Not to mention the fact that my cycle is coming back
on its own! Wheew.. no more Provera!
Again, thanks and I hope that you get some help from that
    endocrinologist!

  • Welcome Dixi!

What exactly is PCOS? I'm asking because you mentioned your cycle coming back. I haven't had a period since April and I'm not pregnant. I've lost 158 lbs in a little over a year which I'm sure has something to do with it, but now that it's been almost 4 months I'm really concerned. What are the symptoms? I really need to get my butt to the gyn. My yearly visit is next month but I may have to go sooner.

    Thanks!

  • Hi JHP
PCOS has many symptoms and they can be different for
every woman that has it, but some of them are..
menstrual irregularities, excessive facial or body hair,
fertility problems, skin problems, excess weight and
difficulty in losing weight etc... There are so many more,
but I will post some great PCOS sites below for you. One
of them actually has a test you can take that will tell you
    if you might have PCOS.
CONGRATULATIONS on that weight loss!! That is amazing
and you should be very proud I'm hoping that I am on
my way to losing more now that I am on medication and
know that low carb is the way to go for me.
If you have any other questions, feel free to email me.

  • Thanks, DixiMon. I don't have any symptoms except for being irregular for these past few months. The only other time this has happened to me was when I was about 17 and lost 50 lbs so I'm pretty sure it's related to the weight loss. I just get paranoid since one of my main reasons for losing all this weight was so that I could have babies! Dr. Atkins' book doesn't give any information about how this woe may affect menstrual cycles, fertitlity, etc but I know from reading people's experiences on other BB 's that it does. Have you heard anything "official" regarding this?

    Thanks!

  • Jennifer,
I have read several articles that indicate either quick weight gain
or loss as being a factor in Amenorrhea. If you don't start on your own, your doctor may give you Provera or something to give your cycle a boost. You'll probably be okay then
The following article is one of the many I found while searching for my real diagnosis. Sometimes we have to take charge when it comes to doctors!

    Take Care,
    Dixi

    Hi all.......

I've been hitting your site for almost 2 weeks now and really enjoy reading everyone's entries. I had posted a thread the other day re: the Atkins diet, as I was feeling quite frustrated. Thanks to all who gave me suggestions.

Maybe I'm not giving it a fair try, but I've nearly completed the induction phase of the diet and I weighed the same today as I did almost 2 weeks ago. In addition, since I have type 2 diabetes, I found my blood sugar levels were doing great, but that my sugar levels would drop really low during the day (sometimes more than once) and the bad part is, you really can't eat anything to bring up your sugar levels w/out throwing the diet off kilter. So, I think I'm going to try going back on my diabetic diet and see how this goes. A 1500 cal. diet was prescribed for me, and I guess that doesn't seem like very much food when I look at what you're allowed to eat, but part of me is afraid that this is too many calories to lose weight. I suppose I'll have to give it a whirl and see what happens. At least I feel like
my sugar levels may still remain stable w/out signifcant drops
    during the day.

JHP....can I ask how you have been so successful at losing 158 lbs? That is so wonderful and you should be so proud of your accomplishment!!! Presently, I'm about 5'8" and weigh 282 lbs. so I easily need to lose around 120 lbs. (ugg). Please share how you achieved such great success!!

DixiMom.....gee we're near neighbors......I only live around 50 miles from you......for now anyway until we relocate to England in a few months.

Take care everyone and thanks for your support!

  • Hi Pooky2,

I lost my weight by basically staying on induction level & not cheating for the first year (started June 10, 2000). I basically cheated my way through June & early July of this year but am back on track. Unfortunately, my weight loss has slowed considerably since I've added more veggies last month. I also exercise every day (usually twice) & drink lots of water.
I hope you are able to find the plan that is right for you. Taking care of your diabetes is the most importatnt thing.
Why are you relocating to England? Job transfer? I'm jealous!

    Take care.
