This time next week...

  • well not quite, but on 25th April my mum and I are off to Cyprus for a week. I'm going to have that week as my add a meal week on Cambridge Diet (I can have a small meal made up of veg and protein-no carbs) so I was just wondering if any of you have been there and can recommend any local type food that is low in fat. I like eating local stuff when I go on holiday and trying new things.
    Thanks
    Heather
P.S: This time next week I'll be 25 (Saturday is my birthday.)
  • Me again. Haven't been to Cyprus but I've been to Greece and the salads are to die for. Everything tastes so much better with the sun on it. Of course they tend to whack a huge slab of feta on top but you could cut that down to the size you want for your protein element.

Loads of simply cooked meat too - lamb chops definitely and pork, I think. Grilled fish is another speciality I think - yummie.

25 pah! A mere babe - I'm heading for 41 this year, that's when you should be thinking about getting depressed

Have a fab birthday and a great holiday - I wish I was going, I'll probably be man handling furniture while you're sunning yourself.
  • Oy - none of that! You are both mere babes in arms.... I'm turning 51 in June
  • I've not been to Cyprus, but in Turkey any of the small cafes will make you something special, so if you tell them what you want they will do you a lower fat salad, or some grilled meat etc.

I'm turning 34 this year, but hubby is turning 55, so Sarah, your just a spring chook after all!!!
  • I've already turned this year It's a shame you have to get older on your birthday
  • My Mum always used to tell me that age is just a number - its how you feel on the inside that matters.

    Load of
  • 25??? Heather I have UNDERWEAR older than you! ROFL!

Jen (who just turned 41 on Saturday!)

LOL! Happy belated Birthday Jen. Hope you had a great day.

I've never been to Cyprus heather but I hope you have a great time. It will no doubt be a welcome break for you and hopefully give you some positive motivation. Lots of happy birthday wishes to you too!

I'll be 27 in June and dont want to get to 28 and still be fat, so thats a goal I'm aiming for.
  • Heather, lucky you. I've been to Cyprus loads of times (going again in 5 weeks and just about to add a new thread bout that!).

The food is gorgeous (I always put loads of weight on when we go), but like others have said, there is always a great choice of salads, lovely grilled chicken and pork (if you eat it) which you can get with lots of veggies and some rice. They do tend to serve chips with everything - so take care with that! If you like the thought of the grilled chicken /pork look for "souvlaki" on the menu - its grilled on a metal kebab skewer and usually has some nice veg with it too. Most places offer you chips, jacket potato or rice with your main meal.

Things to avoid would be moussaka, taramosalata, and the local style puddings. Try not to eat too much pitta bread - they give you a huge basket and its dead easy to scoff your way thru it all!

You will be able to have local strawberries and other fruit as a pudding. At this time of year the strawbs are gorgeous.

If you like fish they cook it really well, they do use a lot of olive oil, but thats good for you anyway.

So thats the local food. You can also get McD's, Pizza Hut, Pizza Express, BK, KFC etc etc - but you dont want any of that stuff on your hols do you?

    Whereabouts are you going?

PM me if you want to know anymore info. I'm jealous now and cant wait for my hol at the end of May!!
  • Ohhhhhhhhhhh taramasalata - ohhhhhhhhhhhhhhh YUMMMMMMMMMM!
  • Oh blimey - I'd forgotten about taramasalata and pitta bread - mmmmmmmmmmmmm - thanks a bunch!
  • Thanks for the birthday wishes, Veggie and Pink Lady!
