Did anyone see the TV Show, Honey We're Killing The Kids?

  • It was on TLC last night. I thought it was great. The family had three boys. They said the youngest ate a POUND of sugar a day. I wonder how easy that is?? My teen daughter is definately a sugar addict. Since the birth of my son though, 2 yrs, I have definately changed what we put in our house, but not to the extreme that I should.

    We've made small changes, like cooking at home, no more white bread (with the exception of hamburger/hot dog buns) etc. I liked the show as it gave more ideas.

    They also really made the youngest look REALLY bad when they imaged him as 40. I wish someone would have done that to me 15 years ago! haha!!!

    Does it seem to you that the information on weight loss nowadays is so much better than before? I don't remember hearing anything about weight/health as a child. Just when I got fat, I starved, lost weight, gained it back, went on stupid diets like "the baby food diet" stuff like that; I don't remember hearing so much information as we do now. I hope that it helps the young kids nowadays.

  • When my first son was born in 1991 I was an older very paranoid mom. He didn't eat his firstm hotdog till he was 5 years old. And that was at a birthday party! I even made homemad baby food. There was no such thing as junk food or sugary treats. He didn't have his first Twinkie until just recently. To this day, he is a healthy eater who steers clear of candy, chocolate, chips and processed food. He eats only wheat bread and on the first day of school he had grilled cheese and told me he couldn't eat it because it was soooo mushy.

    My daughter was born 4 years later and I had relaxed quite a bit. I allowed more snacks and tried not to be so rigid. Boy was that a mistake. She craves sweets, junk food and processed food. If I would let her, she sould junk out all day long.

    ha ha ...if she couldn't make oatmeal appealing, I don't even know what to say. My kids think hot cereal is a *treat*... (tip:splenda & apples) I can't wait to try the brown sugar splenda in hot cereal too!

  • I have also seen children who were denied any sugar/snacks/junk food go wild when they got to a party or school....... I feel there has to be a happy balance. My kids eat candy and junk food. I monitor how much and all, but I don't deny them anything totally. As a result, I often throw out candy and such because it doesn't get eaten. I plan to throw out the remainder of the Valentine cany now because they will receive Easter candy this week. My kids aren't perfect eaters, but they are well rounded eaters who don't go overboard on anything. Isn't that the message I want to send?!

  • I agree with you Sharon. I do the same thing with my kids. I let them eat candies and chocolate in moderation and not every day. I also think that if you do not allow them to eat something, when you are not there, they will eat it like crazy. There is nothing sweeter then eating something you are forbidden! And the kids are happy with that. They eat some once in a while and there is always candies in the pantry. Like yourself, I always end up trowing it away after a while. They still have candies from Halloween!

    For their Easter Egg Hunt this year, I asked my sister in law if she would mind it if I changed it this year a bit. Instead of just candies in the eggs, I will put clues to where their Easter Chocolate is. This way, it will make it more fun and also take longer then 2 or 3 minutes to find all the eggs! And also, there is less candies for me to eat! LOL
