In the Atkins book he says that you should take vitamins but without iron, but he never says why. Can someone explain that to me please? All I have right now is a multi vitamin with iron and I really don't want to buy more vitamins, but I will if I have to. Also, I don't eat meat so perhaps I am not getting tons of iron anyways, so maybe it would be safe to take a vitamin with iron.
If you aren't eating meat, what are your protein sources? Generallly, people who are following Atkins are getting enough iron from food, and too much iron can be dangerous. I switched to a multi w/calcium, no iron.
Unless you have a problem with high iron levels in your blood, I wouldn't worry about it. I take a multi-vitamin with iron and my iron levels are checked every 3 months due to my Celiac disease. They are happily back to normal and maintaining normal.
You can always ask your doctor to check it for you.
I get my protein from eggs, cheese, and fake meat.
It's hard to know if you're getting enough iron. Iron is found in green leafy veggies, broccoli, etc, in addition to meat, but I don't know about eggs and dairy. I'd guess that you're safe to take a suppliment, but I'd have the Doc run a quick check to make sure next time you're there.
