Recipe/food ideas needed

  • I am needing some ideas/suggestions...

On warm days I have different options for a kind of sweet indulgence ~ popsicles, yogurt, fruit on cottage cheese, apples, oranges things like that. But when the weather is cold, none of these things appeal to me. Do any of you have any ideas of something along these lines that could be served warm on a cold day?

    Thank you for your help.
  • Hi Gayle,
Are you only looking for sweet fix food ideas? Here is my favourite low-cal hot sweet

Chop half an apple and half of a banana in a bowl and drizzle about a tablespoon of maple syrup all around. Stir and heat in microwave for 45 sec. Yummers. It's about 130 cals in total but it's quite a big dessert.

Can't wait to see some other ideas.

  • Thanks Dee ~ yes I was looking for sort of deserty ideas. Kind of a sweet treat after supper ~ but something that would be ok to have and not get me into trouble like candy or cookies do. I sometimes have a pop tart and some hot cocoa, but having a variety of choices helps me not to feel deprived I guess. I guess it is head games for me ~ but hey ~ whatever works.
  • I like cold items no matter what the weather so I don't have many ideas. One would be some low fat/no sugar added cocoa? I also made a pumpkin pie pudding in a crockpot once, but it wasn't exactly low calorie even with trying my best to cut out the fat/sugar.

    Crockpot Pumpkin pie pudding
1 (15 ounce) can solid pack pumpkin
    1 (12 ounce) can low-fat evaporated milk
    3/4 cup splenda
    1/2 cup low-fat Bisquick
2 eggs, beaten (or 4 egg whites)
2 tablespoons butter or margarine (melted)
2 1/2 teaspoons pumpkin pie spice
    2 teaspoons vanilla

Mix ingredients together then cook on low for 4 hours

I think you could also do it in the oven if you cooked it the same way you cooked a custard in that you put the ingredients in a pan, then put a pan with water under it.
  • I like a bowl of oatmeal with blueberries and apples in it. I usally get the instant and right now have the Kashi Honey and Cininamin. The oatmeal is 150 and then how ever much fruit you put in. I do a half of apple and 1/4 cup berries and it ends up being around 200 calories for the whole bowl.
  • If I am looking for comfort food I run for oatmeal too... I mix mine with eggwhites and milk or soymilk and it comes out very creamy sort of like a custard. I add vanilla, raisins and Splenda...

1/3c oatmeal, large flake is the best for you
    1/3c water
    1/2c eggwhites
    1/2c milk or soymilk

Put in microwave for about 3-4 minutes whisking it every minute till it's done...
  • That sounds really good Ilene. I will have to try that.
  • Are you having roller-coaster weather too, Gayle? We had 70-degree temps 2 weekends ago, and greeted the first day of spring with several inches of snow!

What about sugar-free/fat-free hot coca to drink? That hits the spot for me -- and if you want something to eat along with it, maybe a lowfat graham cracker or even whole-grain toast to dunk in it?
  • I like to take a banana, split it lengthwise, sprinkle cinnamon and Splenda all over it, and microwave it for about 20 seconds. Throw a dollop of FF cool whip on top (with a cherry, if you'd like), and VOILA toasty banana split! Sometimes, I'll sprinkle a little Kashi Go Lean cereal over the banana after heating it, if I'm wanting something with a crunch to it.
  • OOOhhhhhh ~ these suggestions sound good, I am looking forward to trying them. Thanks all ~ keep 'em comming.
  • Ilene - How many egg whites is a 1/2 cup??
  • nelie, your recipe sounds great!!!

    here are my ideas:

1 packet weight control cinnamon oatmeal

1 packet diet hot cocoa, made with hot milk, extra cocoa & a dash of cinnamon to make it richer tasting

you can put ff/sf chocolate pudding in the microwave to heat up for a bit to make it not so cold, tastes a little like hot fudge, just DONT overdo! And put it in a custard cup or ramekin first.

1 banana sliced, 1 handful of spanish peanuts, 1 squirt dark chocolate syrup. mix in a bowl & eat, heat up if you wish.

baked apple in the microwave--core an apple, stuff a caramel & a marshmallow in the middle & nuke for...I wanna say 2-3 minutes?

    About 4 Sandy...
  • Here is another favourite of mine

    Protein pancakes:

    1/3c oatmeal
    1/3c cottage cheese
    1/3c eggwhites
    Splenda and vanilla to taste

Blend everything till smooth, I use a hand mixer... cook like a pancake, makes one large or 2-3 small ones...
  • I thought of one I had forgotten ~ homemade applesauce. It is chunky ~ I can eat it warm or cold. I replaced 1/2 the brown sugar it calls for with splenda. I made up a batch this weekend to use in my work lunches. Yumm!
