Thoes of you in school

  • I have a question for thoes of y ou in school
I'm going back to school starting April 3rd.. I was just wondering what kind of healthy foods you take for your lunches.
  • Usually I eat lunch in my apartment...it's been so long since I've eaten in the cafeteria. But for lunch I usually stick to a fruit or veggie, water or tea, a sandwich and something fun like a small bag of chips or some type of low fat snack item.
If you get an insulated lunch bag you can always put ice packs in it and keep your food cool.
  • Tuna tuna tuna. I love that stuff!

I also make low-cal sandwiches with Oscar Meyer lean meat deli pack and 40cal slices of wheat bread from meijer. I can have a nice sized sandwich for only 125 calories! Along with that, I'd bring an apple and a light 'n fit yogurt (60 calories, ladies!).
  • I'm definitely hooked on those Cloverleaf flavoured tunas - the little cans, especially sun-dried tomato and basil. I eat a can of that with multigrain wheat thins. I try to keep tuna to 2 days/week, because of the mercury levels in it. The other days I like to make wraps with whole wheat tortillas, salad, sliced chicken or turkey deli-style meat, some cut up veggies, and dressing. My third standby is hard-boiled eggs - lots of protien and easy to make.
I always make sure I bring carrot sticks, as well as lots of fruit - generally I bring more than I think I'll eat, so that in case I do get hungry I'm not tempted to go to the cafeteria.
  • For my lunches I'll bring carrots/celery and hummus, yogurt, nuts, tuna and crackers, fruit.... Most of which is very portable and will taste fine even if it's been in your bag all day.
  • I love balance bars. I like the fat free tuna and crackers packs. I'll bring some nuts in a baggie for a snack sometimes. You'll get pretty creative after a while. I don't ever eat in the caf just because I am broke and it's not included in tuition.
  • Water.
Fruit - usually apples, oranges or cantaloupe or other melon (cut up in a container), or a banana and apricot or pear and natural yoghurt, which I then use to make my own fruit salad on the spot.
    Carrot sticks.
Steamed broccoli, which I then warm up in the microwave (and sometimes eat with a bit of mayo - adds to the taste!)
Chicken salad wrap - I bake some chicken, cut it up into chunks, add some diced red or green pepper and mix it all with a bit of mayo, then it goes into a tortilla wrap with lettuce or without.
Sometimes I carry tea bags with me for quick, cheap and easy warm drink on the go (I just ask for hot water in the cafeteria).

But I must admit that I often get lazy or too busy to prepare any of that and just take apples and carrots with me, and then get sushi at the cafeteria (expensive, I know...). Sometimes I get soups - they're usually the cheapest cafeteria food and can be very tasty and very filling. The disadvantage is, of course, that you don't quite know how it was prepared and how many calories it ends up having...
  • I stay off campus and I take a salad sometimes or I'll do a sandwhich (muli-grain wheat bread) with either pretzels, fruit, or both and I drink lots of water. I also take yogurts sometimes as well
  • I usually pack a salad. Lately, I've been using the flat-out bread and making it with turkey and cheese, and making a roll-up. I also cook up chicken and broccoli, mix it with cheese, and then just heat it up when I'm hungry.
  • kayleystar.. just wanted to say you are doing fantastic!
    keep it up
  • I'm a big advocate of salads and yogurt. Soups are pretty convenient too.
