Potatoes and my Husband

  • I've been working at eating the Sonoma way and it's GREAT.

My husband is a potato nut. If you ask him what his favorite food is, he'll tell you potatoes. He just loves them - mashed, baked, oven baked/fried with onions, rosemary and garlic, parsleyed. Loves them.

He is not overweight - I don't think I ever could get him to give them up forever. Mostly I try to make 2 vegetables as well as the potatoes and then he eats them and I eat mostly vegies. He's really not hard to cook for - eats anything and loves the vegies and good stuff, too.

I guess I'll just de-emphasize them - but he will miss them! After 30 years of marriage, it's hard to get them to learn new tricks - at least not quickly.

Anybody else go through this with anything you are trying to modify?
  • Cindy,

One way to "wean" him off of them so to speak would be to serve them with some other items.

I adore this recipe... the original recipe called for tatos in it to, so maybe toss a few in there for him

  • That recipe sounds divine. I know we'd love it - with or without potatoes.

I honestly don't think potatoes are that bad and I know this is sacreligious or whatever. But at a point, I think they are ok in moderation. They are just easy to overdo like a lot of things.

I'm going to try that recipe very soon. And I so agree that fresh herbs make a big difference. I just love fresh rosemary in things - I keep a pot growing in the house all the time.
  • I agree! I don't think potatoes are bad in moderation... but I have been using the light sweet potatoes almost exclusively. More nutrition and actually SO much better!! Just a suggestion.
  • I make potatoes once in a while. I just don't eat them. One nice one done in the mic suits my meat and potatoes man very nicely.

oh and it's not the spud itself that's a problem for me, it's the butter, sour cream etc!
  • I agree about it being the butter and sour cream... so I just learned to eat potatoes without them... and guess what, now I can't STAND butter on them! I would still like the sour cream but I don't. I fix light colored sweet potatoes and put fresh salsa and chopped onion them... chop the potatoes and bake it with that on there... yum
  • There are some good freezer mashed potato recipes out there; maybe you could make up a batch of those and freeze them in individual portions for him?
