i have a question

  • I am just curious... If someone is overweight, and they are diagnosed with PCOS, then they loose all or even most of the weight, does the PCOS go away??? Or atleast do the symptoms subside???
I am planning on asking my ob/gyn this question but when i asked my family doctor he said: (and i am being totally honest here) "Well, no one i know of has ever really lost the weight. i was totally shocked by his answer. Anyway's just hoping someone knows the answer... Thanks!!!
  • My niece had gastric bypass almost a year ago and at the time had PCOS. She now has lost about 100 pounds and at her last checkup....no sign of the PCOS! So I would have to yes,at least in her situation.
  • A friend of mine diagnosed with PCOS, lost all the weight but she still has PCOS but the symptoms subsided as you said. I've asked my doctor and he said that's most likely to happen, there is no true cure for PCOS yet.
I've personally lost about 40 pounds since I've been diagnosed with it. I've started to notice some changes, my hair is less oily and starting to get better. I have less pimples on my face, and its a bit brighter and clearer.
I've also realized that the cramps I used to get are almost gone. The hair on my face is becoming thinner. So yes, its slowly getting better
  • I was diagnosed with PCOS when I was skinny (125 lbs.) but that was 7 years ago. So I don't know... The only symptom that has gotten worse with time is my weight gain. I guess I kind of figure that since I was skinny when I was diagnosed that it's not really ever going to go away in my case.
  • Ditto...it is just an underlying condition & you can reduce symptoms through weight loss. PCOS is really only a concern if: you are trying to get pregnant, you are overweight, your triglyceride/cholesterol levels are high (predisposes you to cardiovascular disease), or you aren't having periods hardly ever (predispose to "endometrial hyperplasia"....aka greater chance of endometrial cancer). I think that weight loss is just vital for your overall health, but really important to reduce/rid yourself of these symptoms! FYI: I am in medical school and still learning all this...both as a student and as a Dx PCOS considering pregnancy in the next year or so! I hope that I can be of help to someone with the medical aspect
