Vodka Sauce

  • Every time I go to Meijer I see jars upon jars of sexy-looking vodka sauce jars. Particularly Emeril's. Yes, I am trying to be healthier and have no business buying an overpriced jar of preservatives. But for special occasions... has anyone tried a vodka sauce? Any advise so far as its positives/negatives compared to regular marinara?
  • Don't know about the comparisons to other sauces, but I've tried vodka sauce and personally didn't like it. But that's just me
  • its not bad...but you can make your own version if you were concerned with calories, and it probably wouldn't be near as bad if you used things like no-fat cream and etc. Its not really hard to make. THere are a lot of recipes out there.

  • I haven't tried the jar vodka sauce, but I have had it in restaurants with pasta and in pizza and I love it. You can google "vodka sauce" and find lots of recipes, then substitute natural, lowfat and sugar-free ingredients. Tell us how you like it.
  • I love vodka sauce, try throwing in some chopped fresh veggies (red pepper, mushrooms, green peppers) and some salad shrimps to make it interesting.
  • I love Vodka sauce too.. Maeg, I tried Emerils, but I didn't care for it at all... Funny, it tasted like it had ground up black olives in it, but there were none listedunder the ingriedients

    Here's an easy make at home one that makes 10 servings...I haven't tried to substitute the heavy cream yet..

    INGREDIENTS:

    * 1/2 cup butter
    * 1 onion, diced
    * 1 cup vodka
    * 2 (28 ounce) cans crushed tomatoes
    * 1 pint heavy cream

    DIRECTIONS:

    1. In a skillet over medium heat, saute onion in butter until slightly brown and soft. Pour in vodka and let cook for 10 minutes. Mix in crushed tomatoes and cook for 30 minutes. Pour in heavy cream and cook for another 30 minutes.
