Keeping produce fresh?

  • I was so mad today when i looked in my fridge and my tomato's were getting moldy like and cucumbers were smushy! I just got these things friday!! My question is how do you keep your produce from spoiling?! thanks- Kim
  • I get a lot of the prewashed bagged salads. Keep them tightly sealed once you open them. I've had them stay OK a few days.
  • Try a farmer's market...
My suggestion is to buy quality produce from a farmers market or high-end grocery store like Whole Foods instead of Safeway. It's worth the extra cost up-front to buy quality produce that will keep through the week rather than throwing your money out when the cheap produce goes bad.
  • One thing I've found that helps is to make sure that my produce is dry and in an airtight container.
  • I purchased these green bags from "QVC" and they are awesome! They are a little spendy to start with but I just wash them out and use them again. I have not had any produce spoil since I started using them and that is a savings. They do something to control the gasses that are released from produce. I have actually had bell peppers in the fridge for over 3 weeks..and lettuce stays so fresh.

I could get the name if anyone is interested...
  • Can you reuse those green bags? I see them on the website - they are expensive though. But so is tossing produce...
