Metabolic Decline? Plateau? Protein Theory

  • I found this and wondered what some of you thought it might mean to you?

........ comes from a research team from Boston. They compared two diets over nine days, both providing an average of 1,492 calories. The low-protein diet contained 67% carbohydrate, 15% protein, and 18% fat. The moderate-protein diet contained 43% carbohydrate, 27% protein, and 30% fat.

Daily metabolic rate dropped to a greater extent in the group consuming the low-protein diet. The results show a 10% decline during the low-protein diet, but only a 5% drop during the moderate-protein diet.
  • Wow, that's really interesting. Who did this? where did it come from? It's too bad they didn't do some kind of study on a higher protein diet, or maybe not just the % but the daily grams too...it makes some kind of sense though that eating more protein would help lead to more muscle growth and therefore keep your metabolism from dropping.
  • I actually got it off a Weight Watchers site. I was originally looking to see how many calories are in a point. They didn't say who the researchers in Boston were.

I do believe that is the theory behind it. I know that eating protein in general is supposed to help guard your muscles against breaking down in a low-cal diet.
