College Phys Ed Classes

  • I've been considering taking a phys ed unit this semester, but the only thing that fits around my work schedule is yoga from 1:30pm-3pm on Saturdays. While I really like the idea of kind of being forced to exercise (I'm a freak about maintaining my GPA), I'm not sure how keen I am on the idea of also forcing myself to stay in town every weekend during the semester.

Any comments/ideas? I'm so terrible with making decisions.
  • I can understand the not wanting to take the phy ed courses. By the time my senior year came around, the university did away with the mandatory requirement of the phy ed courses. Before that I did enjoy the step aerobics class. It was at 7:00 in the morning, which was a little difficult to get used to but the class got me up and going. Sorry, I can't tell you if yoga would be worth it because I haven't taken a class like that. A friend likes it a lot, but I'm just not sure if I'd enjoy the whole sitting/meditating in positions kind of thing.
  • Hey there. This semester I am taking a dance class once a week and a Pilates class once a week. They are not on the weekends though. I am also very determined about my GPA that's why I know I will go to these classes. I'd say take it, I think it is a good idea!
  • I'm kind of floored that your university has phys ed classes that you can get credit for towards your GPA. =O No canadian universities to my knowledge have anything like that!
  • Well here's the really irritating part about the classes affecting your GPA here.

The credits aren't transferrable to other schools, and if you pass the class with an A, it won't raise your overall GPA. However, if you get a C, for example, it will lower your overall GPA. The administration is sick, I tell you. Sick sick sick.

(Though I guess they do kind of have a good reason for doing it. There were a lot of people who wanted to get grants for being full-time without doing full-time work. They would sign up for one or two regular classes, then a bunch of phys ed classes, get the grant, ditch their phys ed classes, subsequently fail the phys ed classes, and their GPA wouldn't be affected).
  • I love yoga, but it would be really tough for me to take that class because it is in the middle of Saturday afternoon. I love to get out of town for the weekends and get away from work & college to destress. If your someone who stays close to home-base (lol), then I think it would be good for you.
  • I know this was posted a while ago, but I've been out of town for a little while. I took a gym class before, but the problem was that after working out in the mornings the last thing i wanted to do was work out AGAIN. if ur the type who talks her way out of working out and sometimes skips days then i recommend it. otherwise u don't want to overdo the work outs.
  • I personally couldn`t stay in town every weekend to do yoga. You already seem to have some reservations about it, so maybe it isn`t for you. I just feel like with a class like yoga...exercise people recommend that you do additional cardio/strength training (at least from what I've read) along with yoga so it wouldn't be a complete work out anyway. If it was more convenient, I'd say go for it. But since you'd have to rearrange your plans for only a partial work out, I'd pass on it.
  • The phys ed class I took was basically just like a gym membership. We had open access to the campus gym. You'd sign in when you came/left and the only requirement was you had to get in 24 hours in the semester. I've taken it 3 times (before I joined my gym) and the last time I got the 24 hours in literally in a month. I was going 6x a week. I'd like to take a pilates class or something but I'm afraid I wouldn't be able to do it.
  • Okay, I decided not to take the class, and not just because it's on a precious Saturday (I really would like the freedom to get out of town). I have a habit of overloading myself with classes, and this coming semester is no exception, PLUS I work full time... So I don't think I'll take it. Thanks, everyone, for all of your input ^.^
  • I'm in my Second year of College and its not as easy as the first year was. I mean I'm not taking hard classes or anything but the workload is terrible and I'm just overwhelmed because I"m trying to finish it on time. Having a Math class two times a week isn't good I mean I didn't want to have a math class two times a week because that meant double the work and I was not about to have that but i guess I have to bite the bullet!
