Walking in place....

  • As you all know..it's cooold outside! But anyway, I usually dont have much time to go outdoors and walk, so I've decided to incorporate walking in my exerise schedule by walking in place. Walking is walking..so do you all think this will be just as effective as walking outside? I kno, its a stupid question, it just feels "different" But anyway, has anyone else tried walking in place? And, about how long do you have to walk in place to go a mile?

    Thanks
  • Hi Renee--

Check out Leslie Sansone's Walk Away the Pounds tapes (usually abbreviated WATP in case you see that). Her tapes add a bit more than straight marching in place, but she considers it walking and the tapes all come with a mileage amount (1, 2, and 4 miles are most common I think). I haven't spent enough time on the exercise boards to see what the buzz is lately, but I know when I was doing WW several years ago EVERYBODY raved about the tapes (and I have several of them so I like them too). I think one of the reasons Leslie is so popular is that she doesn't use complicated dance moves so you can get a lot from her tapes right from the get-go without having to learn a big routine

15-20 minutes would count for amount a mile, although I would be skeptical about plain marching in place taking less than 20 minutes to equal a mile. Because Leslie throws in a bit of upper body work (which helps raise the heart rate as well as tone your arms, shoulders), I think her 1 mile tape is 15 minutes (I THINK....but then there's some warm-up and a bit of stretching). Hey....anything that gets you moving, right?
