Stupid question

  • Ok I just thought of something. Warning you its a stupid question. Ok if you are outside being active in cold weather do you burn or more less calories than when it's warm? Or does it not matter? Just wondering since I just finished shoveling snow and it's like 8 degrees outside!
  • Technically, working out in cold weather does require more caloric output for your body, but not enough to make a brownie's worth of difference. If you enjoy working out in the great outdoors, then go ahead, but it's not going to make a substantial difference. In fact, you may work out longer indoors because it's more comfortable and get a better work out that way.

Side note: when working out outside in the winter, make sure you warm-up slowly and stretch! It's really easy to pull a muscle in the cold!
  • Actually as I was scooping snow again this morning I was hoping I was burning tons of calories. Okay so I know that I wasn't because I don't have a lot to scoop but as I am out there freezing to death it is a nice fantasy, picturing myself in a bikini this summer Well maybe I was just fantasizing about summer. I've had enough snow already.

  • Hey Jen according to fitday you burn as many calories shoveling snow as you do doing aerobics! This would be the reason I've frozen my butt off 3 times in the past week and dh has only done it once. Any excuse to get a relatively easy workout in. Course I do the whole two car drive way plus our sidewalk and the sidewalk for the neighbors immediately on both sides of us so at minimum it takes me about 45 minutes. The more snow the longer it takes. The reason for doing the one neighbor is because I know the guy has a snow plow and I'm hoping when we have a foot of snow he'll do our sidewalk for us.
  • Good thing about the calories burned while shoveling cause it looks like we are in for more snow here
    Jen
  • Yep same here. There's calling for snow almost every day this month but not alot just a little at a time.
