Anyone go to Curves???

  • Does anyone or has anyone gone to Curves or the similar places? Did they do you any good?

I am thinking of asking my DH for a membership for Christmas....I will go in one day and try it. Might be the added kick I need.

    Thanks, Phyllis
  • Hi Phyllis

I went to curves two years ago and loved it when I went. unfortunatley, their hrs are not good for my schedule...my hubby doesn't come home till 7and they close the doors at 7:30 so you have to be on the premises no later than 7 to get in the workout. Now the kids are a bit older and I could probably leave them home to wait on their father, but I haven't gone and joined again. I lost inches and pounds and felt good about my self for the 5 months I did partake.

I hope this helps...feel free to ask any other questions...I will try to answer!
  • I've been going to Curves 3x a week for two years and I've only missed one week when I had the 'flu. I love it as I get a good, low-impact workout and it only takes 30 minutes. I have arthritis in my foot, so I can't do high impact aerobics or walk very far. Another good thing at Curves is that you don't have to adjust the machines. The harder you work the machines, the more resistance you get, so it's up to you what you get out of the workout.

I've had memberships in regular gyms before but have always quit because I felt self-conscious, plus I didn't like having to wait for the machines, but Curves fits the bill for me. I've met some nice ladies there of all shapes and sizes and age groups and the time goes by quickly.

My arms and thighs have firmed up a lot since I started out. My left shoulder was almost "frozen" due to surgery and now I have full range of motion in it. My knees don't hurt any more, probably because I've strengthened my thigh muscles.

Now that I'm starting to lose weight I'm beginning to see more muscle definition appearing, which is great! Don't worry, you won't turn into a 'muscle woman' at Curves

They let you give it a try before signing up, so I would recommend you go and see if you like it first.
  • Can someone tell me roughly what it cost? I've been thinking about joining but money is a little on the tight side right now.
  • I don't know yet, but they usually run specials. I would think around Christmas and after the 1st of the year they would run some deals, call and ask them or just stop in, you get to do one free session to see what it's like.

  • When I joined, they were doing a "special" i.e. no joining fee. I pay $29.00 per month and it's paid automatically out of my checking account.
  • I just joined 3 days ago and have been going ever since everyday....lol

    I LOVE it!!!!

The special they are running is no membership fees for the rest of the year and the startup fee is 79 instead of 149.

I think it is so worth it. It is a comfortable atmosphere and it's only 30 minute workout.

I have already lost 2 lbs in three days with eating right and exercising.
  • Phyllis my MIL works out there and loves it. She says it feels good and she can really tell. She does her cardio on her treadmill at home being that curves has no cardio machines. It is circut training only. Great for toning.

My friend got a job there, now she owns one. But anyway she went from a size 195 down to a 130. She looks gorgeous!!!!!!! She also did the Curves diet and eliminated her carbs, which I don't think is the healthiest way. When she put her carbs back into her diet she only gained 10 pounds back. So still not too shabby.
  • I've been going to Curves for 2 months. I like it a lot.
I've been losing more inches then weight. I really haven't been cut back on my eating habits too much. I'm working on that this month..not really a good month to start cutting back on food. But will try. Bought a bunch of fresh veggies to nibble on between meals today.
  • I'm also considering joining and wondering if it is worth the money. Also what do you mean when you say you lose inches instead of weight? Will I still have all this fat or will I be smaller?
Does anyone know if you can go to 2 centers instead of one? I'm hoping to be able to go to one by my job in order to go during the week and one by home to go on the weekend otherwise I'm afraid I'm not going to be able to do 3 times a week since I have a child and they don't offer childcare.
  • Pink, each one is individually owned and operated so I believe the answer would be no. But I remember my MIL saying something when we were on vacation how she should find a curves to workour in while we were there. So maybe you can. You should call the center and ask.

There may be a reason why she is losing inches and not pounds right now. Curves is circut training. NO cardio. Which tones and strengthens your muscles. Muscles weigh more than fat. But when you have stronger muscled it helps burn up fat quicker. So when you tone, you will "gain muscle" sometimes even gain weight ( a smidgen ) But then that muscle burns the fat and you WILL lose the bulky fat. Muscle is lean and takes up less space in your body. Fat is chunky like a big ball of crisco. So curved takes the muscles and makes them lean, tone, and sculpted. So remembering muscle weighs more than fat but takes up less space is a big thing when you are toning your body. Cardio burns fat as well, so you would want to incorporate that at home. EX: walking, jogging, vcr videos. Hope this helps.
