Just wondering??? Being from Canada and just getting what we see on the TV and magazines I get the impression that Thanksgiving is considered a bigger holiday in the US over Christmas Just wondering if that is really true.
apparently years ago our Thanksgiving was also in Nov and not in Oct as it is now. I have now idea why it was changed.

Hmmm… maybe it seems like a bigger holiday because it comes first. It’s the first time in months that I will be getting together with all the family. And, Christmas is much busier time of year. Thanksgiving, I cook and enjoy the family. Christmas, I’m shopping; working on the Christmas play; wrapping; baking; etc.

I think Christmas is the bigger holiday for me, but Thanksgiving will be welcomed with much gratitude. Besides, on Thanksgiving I give thanks for EVERYTHING God is blessed me with. On Christmas I commemorate the birth of His son. Hard to compare!

I consider Thanksgiving the start of the holiday season, but in no way 'bigger' than Christmas. Ask anybody (or most, I would think) which holiday is their fav. They will either say Halloween (my fav) or Christmas. Thanksgiving hails the start of people putting up their Christmas decoration, the start of frantic holiday shopping, and giving thanks for all your blessings. To me, it's not a big deal, since I hate Thanksgiving food (which isn't even accurate to the first Thanksgiving anyway). It's just a holiday to get together with family and reconnect and have a good time and have a good meal. At my mom's house, we do the dinner and hang out with family members, no dressing up or anything, and maybe sing karaoke later. At MIL's house, it's the same deal, but instead of karaoke, we watch football.

Anyway, according to me, Thanksgiving is about spending time with family and about traditions. The day after Thanksgiving is the best/worst time to shop, as there are great holiday deals at stores, but lots of people who wake up at the crack of dawn and start Christmas shopping. Again, to me, Thanksgiving (or right after) is a countdown to Christmas and all the holiday festivities. Everybody has traditions within their own family, be it hanging the decorations with their children on Thanksgiving (or after), or watching football while the women cook (I know that is not PC, but that is usually how it works--my one brother deep fries his turkey; he's the only one I know who 'cooks' at Thanksgiving). Most people have turkey, cranberry sauce, stuffing, deviled eggs, maybe some ham. Some families go around the table saying what they give thanks for, others just talk and hang out with their family. Anyway, my longwinded ramble is...Thanksgiving is a big holiday, but no way bigger than Christmas.

I think that T-day is the start of the holiday season. I mean, it's also the start of the eating season!

I grew up eating just as big a meal on t-day as Christmas, only swap the turkey for a ham. And throw in a few gifts

I have to learn that neither holiday is an excuse to binge eat. And I think I did a pretty good job this t-day.

Thanksgiving as stated above is the start of the holiday season and neither is bigger than the other. Thanksgiving is usually the more traveled holiday though.

Hi MRSKMS.....As a Canadian living in the States for the last 4 years....I can assure you that THANKSGIVING IS HUGE HERE!!!! Not so much the day itself meaning anything more than celebrating with family and a huge meal day but......being so close to Christmas (1 month away) it launches the whole shopping season in a huge way. Here the stores open at crazy hours like 4 am or 5 am and the electronics and jewellery are at a fantastic savings. People line up for HOURS outside in the dark and the cold to be the first or priveledge few to get these savings. On the news every black friday....(the day after thanksgiving is known as the day all the businesses finally make it into the 'black' ie...not in debt).....they ALWAYS SHOW....the amount of crowds at the doors to the big box stores getting TRAMPLED and the fights that break out requiring POLICE!!!! So YES.... it is different.
