Is there a BEST Starch?

  • Went to the COD today and was up a half a pound - Tues. there was no loss - I'm very frustrated and my counselor "switched" starches - she said these are the best starches:

lite bread - 40 cal. or less
    Melba Toast
    Wasa bread
    Lowfat graham cracker
    Lowfat Triscuits
    Lowfat Wheat Thins

Now I'm no dietician, but aren't these all processed foods? I asked about a half of a potato, 1/3 cup of corn or 1/3 cup of peas - she said they are not as good as the above starches -

I'm so confused! Wouldn't veggies be better than crackers???

What do you all have the most success with?

    Thanks!
  • Lori - the main difference I can see with these is that they are lower calories? Which probably means less carbs? What kind of starches have you been eating?

How long have you been on the program - could your stall be due to TOM?

    Julie
  • Hi Julie,

I was excited to find we could have a 2 ounce wheat bagel, so I had been eating those for breakfast every day. I also like the 4" pita - and you are right - those have more calories. At supper I like the peas or corn or 1/2 potato for my starch - so...........as you said the ones she mentioned are probably lower in calories -

Been on program since Sept. 21. Lost like crazy and then BAM, this happened. I had a hysterectomy in 1990, so I don't have TOM anymore - thank God for that!

    Thanks for your thoughts!
  • Hi Mary,

My dh were talking tonight about it and I think I read somewhere that the potatos and corn turns right into sugar in your body - so, if that is so, the whole grain would be better -

One day I'll figure all this out!
  • I have always heard that whole wheat (wheat bread, brown rice...) starches are better because of the fiber.
  • Hi Lucky,

It probably is the fiber fact - I'm going to stick with that and see what happens -
  • I'm with Mary and Lucky, I would think the best choices would be whole wheat. Another thing-my councelor told not to eat the same things every day, as I was eating the same thing for breakfast every day as well as the same thing for lunch (I am a creature of habit) she told me to mix it up day by day and that would help to always 'shake up' my metabolism. Just a thought!
  • Hi Applegirl,

I am a creature of habit too - I tend to get stuck in eating the same things too - I'm going to eat the whole wheat lite bread and the Wasa rye crackers and the fiber one cereal and see what happens - thanks for your thoughts!
  • I found you
I am so glad I found you OA. I use to be on this weight program and lose alot of weight. I gain it back because I felt like I was small enough to eat anything. Well you know the answer to that, not good, I started to lose again but I'm at a stand still. I need to lose 25 more pounds. Well wish me luck.
  • Good luck, Rissie. You came to the right place, read the previous threads and you will find gobs of info and support!
