Any plain ol' (lacto-ovo) vegetarians here?

  • Hi! I've just rejoined WW (for about the 30th time). I lost a lot of weight on WW 20 years ago, quit and decided to switch to vegetarianism, and quickly gained 30 pounds!!! (I ate LOTS of bread and cheese and butter and ice cream). I was vegetarian for five years and loved it -- loved the food, loved the cookbooks, loved the idea of it. I went back to non-veg eating when I had to travel a lot and it just got to be too much of a hassle.

    I'm going to TRY to go back to vegetarian eating again. I've looked at other boards and noticed that although they will say they're vegetarian, the posters are mostly ardent vegans who seem to be upset when someone posts a menu with eggs in it. Is there a place here for people who eat milk, eggs and cheese (though not too much of them!)? (And if not, of course, I undersand and will creep quietly away.)

    I have 100 pounds to lose, so it will take awhile!

    I remember when vegetarians ate vegetables and everyone else ate hamburgers, lol. Now there are vegans, and ova-vegan and vegeatarians who eat this and that then there are the ones who occasionally eat a hamburger who are called flexitarians.

    Well health issues have nudged me into being what I was thinking of as a ...part-time vegetarian--that I now understand is called a flexitarian...
    Does it mean if you dont know what category you belong in, you cant eat?? Maybe that would shave off a few for me.

    There is room here for everyone with any kind of eating ....category; and anyone who does not agree is the one who is in the wrong.

    Separated 2 eggs

    beat the yolks with 1-2 tsp milk(skim of course)
    some salt, pepper and some basil dried and crushed in your palm

    In a second bowl whip the egg whites to soft peaks and fold into the yolks gently----add a TB or two of grated cheese of choice

    Into a hot pan over med-low heat--allow to set on bottom and pop into the broiler to cook on top Meanwhile a nice piece of whole grain bread lightly toasted butter or margarine- Pop your egg/cheese onto bread and eat as an open face Serve with a lovely spinach and apple/pear dice salad-Scatter some toasted nuts on top and dressing of choice With a glass of wine Makes a lovely lunch It is one of my favorites

    I want to congratulate you on your choice to give vegetarianism another try! I don't post on any other weightloss boards, so I have no frame of reference but have to tell you that the ardent vegans are a minority here (I'm the only one I know of, really! ) .

    Yogini, I will enjoy reading you, and learning from your ardency (? is that a word?) if you'll let me eat my grilled cheese sandwiches The people on the WW Vegetarians board are all very nice, but when everybody else is eating tofu and seitan and tempeh, I feel kinda weird posting about omelettes.

    WannaB, your recipe looks delicious, but I stopped at the "beat egg whites". That would mean I'd have to find the other blade to the mixer and I'm not going to add exercise for at least another two weeks!



    Anyone up for a menu thread? I need ideas. And having to post what you eat every day helps keep you honest.

    There's a What I Ate Today thread on one of the veggie boards (I read the 3FC rules and so I won't post a link) and it was so odd to read what people who weren't "on a diet" were eating. Oatmeal for breakfast, fruit as snacks, an avocado and tomato sandwich for lunch, a grain and veggie thingy for dinner. Good models!

    I'm lacto-ovo, but don't eat too much lacto-ovo. Over the past two years, I've reduced how often I eat animal products. But I still do eat them, and I'm willing to share recipes and post a food log. Plus I'm not going to bug you about eating an egg.

    I’m brand new here, first post. What a great forum! I’ve been one form or another of “vegetarian” for 11 years now. Up until a couple years ago I ate fish once in a great while, but now I’m lacto-ovo and interested in reducing my animal product intake further. But darn it, cheese is so good! I eat lots of “fake meat” (or “feat” as we call it at my house…not to be confused with “feet”) and find it’s a wonderful and easy way to get some protein in the diet. I too ate my way through much cheese, white bread, pasta, anything-without-a-face-or-a-mother in my early vegetarian years and really paid for it. Between that, the smoking, and all the beer, I was tipping the scales at around 220lbs @ 5’4’’ by the time I left college. I’m still in “recovery”, but learning a lot about healthy vegetarian eating and getting back to exercising and giving weight training a real shot for the first time. I would love to hear what other vegetarians trying to lose weight are eating on a daily basis.

    I'm going to go ahead and start a food log. It seems people are interested in what vegetarians eat on a daily basis. Maybe a log will help us give each other ideas for healthy recipes.
