Weight Loss = Lower Body Temperature?

  • I'm curious to know if this is a common thing among losers. By the time it was getting cold last winter, I had lost about 45-50 pounds, and spent most of the winter feeling like I would never be warm again. I had to learn to dress completely differently than ever in my life - more layers, extra scarf, etc. By this summer, I had lost about 65-70 pounds, and it was the most pleasant summer I can remember in a long time. I would get home, look at the temperature, and be totally incredulous - no way was it 95 degrees! This feels like nuttin'!

Now the mornings are getting cooler again, and I find that I need to bring a sweatshirt with me to the track, lest I freeze to death on the way home.

So this is kind of a weird success story, but I wonder if it's something that any of the rest of you have experienced. After being 70-80 pounds overweight for my entire adult life, and just accepting that I was warm-blooded, this is sort of a cool development....I LIKE it!
  • I've always been cold blooded, but losing weight has definitely made it worse. I can catch a chill in a 70 degree room that nothing but a hot bath will shake. I've also noticed though that hot weather is much more enjoyable now.
  • Before I lost weight, I was always hot, and I hated summer temps. As I lost weight during this last winter, I FROZE! During this summer, I was comfortable and didn't even mind the heat. In fact, I think below 80 is kinda chilly.

I'm already planning a shopping trip to buy everything I'll need for this winter. Thermal socks, sweatpants, sweatshirts, hoodies, etc. I'm DREADING winter!
  • I have had my fan heater on at work. In JULY!
  • Yes. I used to have to have a fan on year round, wore shorts year round and now I am always cold and I still have a ton of ways to go. I can only imagine how cold I'm going to be at goal.
  • That happened to me in 1990, during the summer when I lost 60 or so lbs.

I was participating in a weight loss maintenance study, and we were forewarned by the medical staff there that this would happen - that we would be COLD all the time. Think of it this way - the extra poundage is like wearing extra layers of clothing. As you lose weight, it's like taking off some of those extra sweaters.

Don't fret though - you won't be chilly forever - your body will adjust to having less insulation!
  • Yep, very common. I love it. I hate being hot! lol
  • Yep, as far as I can tell, it happens to almost all of us. And lemme tell ya, I've gotten some pretty strange looks walkin around WalMart in long pants and a fleece jacket when it's 95 degrees outside!! And while I'm hopeful that it will start to subside soon, but I'm certainly not holding my breath. I figure, it's a small price to pay for a healthy, fit body.

  • And here I thought it was just me!! I have to walk around in socks and slippers to keep my feet warm. I used to go in sandles until it snowed. It's a small price to pay though. So just a question...do we burn more calories when we are cold as opposed to warm? Wouldn't THAT be a nice bonus! lol
  • I've heard that being cold burns a teensy bit more calories, because you gotta use some kind of energy to keep warm, right?
  • dietcoke, i read that the lower your body temp is, the less calories your body burns. but i dont know which is true, i doubt it makes much of a difference anyways.
