Switching From Atkins to South Beach

  • I've been on Atkins for about a month now and I was going to switch to the Hamptons diet but I'm opting for South Beach instead. What should I expect? Hopfully not a gain but I desided that I'm in no real hurry and I honestly can't see myself sticking with Atkins for very much longer than a month. It's just too restictive for me I need a more varied menu. and if a see another
egg for breakfast I think I'll

  • Mel, how much do you have to lose? If it's a lot, the transition to South Beach may be okay for you in regards to losing. Otherwise, you may experience a slight stall. South Beach ISN'T a low-carb diet; it's a GOOD carb diet, so you'll definitely be eating more carbs than you would on Atkins. I'll bet you'll feel better, though. Not to knock Atkins, but all that fat (including eggs!) just about killed me when I tried the diet.

Check out the recipe section here... there are lots of good ideas.
  • SBD isn't a low carb plan.. it is a good carb way of eating.. specifically helping you to identify the foods that optimise your health versus those that don't... I know that my entire family is benefiting from eating much more vegies, and being far more selective about the grains that we eat. I now know that it is ok for me to eat rice, but bread and pasta make me feel sick and give me bloating.

  • Hi Sweetmel

South Beach is great - after Phase 1 you DO eat from all the food groups. South Beach in P2 is also very in line with the current food pyramid guidelines.

If you have found Atkins too restrictive, I think you will love South Beach. It isnt low-carb, even during P1 you are encouraged to eat legumes- lentils, kidney beans, chick peas etc. And then in P2 you introduce the starchy carbs back slowly. So think "good carb" not "low-carb" for this plan.

Ellis mentioned the recipe section - its true, it is great. If you enjoy Mexican type food try the Taco Bake, we all seem to love it!

Be sure to have read up on South Beach, I think it's very different to Atkins.

    Good luck!
  • Thanks guys!

I lost 8 pounds on 2 week induction and 3 more the following week, last week I stayed the same.
I have about 30 pounds to lose and I know I could lose it faster if I stayed on atkins
but I really was getting tired of it and I could feel myself wanting to cheat and with the cooler weather coming I know I would start craving "comfort foods" and that would
    be a problem.
