Soup

  • I have found myself eating a lot of soup lately... I usually have the Progresso soups. For half a can it is about 120-130 calories I believe. Anyway, how often do you eat soup? And also, how good is soup for you?
  • Soup is extremely good and healthy for you especially if you make it yourself. It's good to eat a vegetable soup before a meal because it fills you up with a good serving of vegetables, it also cuts your hunger too better than a salad, I read this somewhere... I find canned soup too high in sodium and the vegetables are usually very soggy, but in a pinch they will do.
  • It's nasty rainy and cold (what my mother would call "raw") here today - soup sounds delicious! I make my own veggie soup all winter. I start with a can of pureed or finely diced tomatoes, usually add any or all of the following (plus more water of course): beans (kidney or black usually), carrots, onions, mushrooms, celery, peppers, and spinach, cabbage or swiss chard. Lots of different ways to season this. I only kick myself when a batch is super good and I don't remember what I put in it. If you wants carbs you can add potatoes or turnips, etc. I don't usually.
  • Pat, I love a soup in the winter too...
  • I love soup, its definitely one of my comfort foods. Its usually low calorie and easy to prepare--perfect food!
  • Soup is great! Homemade is best, since you can control what goes into it.

Watch out for cream soups and high sodium soups, though.

Check out Campbell's "Healthy Request" soups.
  • I guess I'm the lone dissenter here...soup just leaves me starving for a real meal. I'd rather have a thicker stew or chili and a glass of water
Commercial soups have waaaay too much sodium and too little fresh food in them to be healthy.

  • I regularly use prepared soups, too. I also like Progresso brand. I find them to be an easy way to get in vegetables, and a filling start to a light meal. I often enhance the prepared soup by adding some sodium free chicken bouilion, a can of stewed tomatoes, tomato sauce, or some extra non-starchy vegetables. This usually lowers the calories per cup and provides more nutrition and better flavor. I cook for one, and I don't have the refrigerator/freezer space to store a large batch of homemade soup. And frankly, I'm not a very good cook. A lot of what I cook isn't so good the first time around, let alone as leftovers.
  • I love a good bowl of soup! My favorite canned soup is Progresso hearty tomato, which is chunky and rich.

ArtikoChef sells a Seven Bean and Mushroom soup that sounds heavenly, and I'd love to find a similar recipe to make on my own. I may break down and order theirs, lol.
