Workout Tip: Turn On Your TV!

  • This was emailed to me and thought I would share:

Working out with the TV? That's right, says Dr. Sears. Not only can the television help you find the time to exercise every day, it can help you structure your routine for maximum benefit. "Rather than making extra time to exercise, why not squeeze in a workout when you're doing something you enjoy?" he suggests. A typical 30-minute sitcom is divided into two 11-minute segments of programming and three three-minute segments of commercials. Here's how to use your TV time to get fit:

    1. Use the programming for the aerobic portion of your workout — on an exercise bike, for instance, or simply marching in place. (A low-cost step platform can help intensify your workouts.)

    2. Switch to strength training during the commercials or use the first commercial break for stretching and the second for strength training.
It will help you get fit in no time!
  • That is a great tip Anita!

Lately I've been feeling guilty when I am watching TV, so during the commercials I've been running in place. I'm trying to build up to running in place during the program and doing something else during the commercials.
  • This is a great idea to use with the treadmill I keep threating to get on....lol

  • Really good tip - Anita. I'm afraid I am turning into a couch potato - can't wait until I can start exercising again!!
  • That was GREAT! I always hate doing my elliptical because I do it for a long time at a time and now I dont want to even start because I think - oh I'll be on there forever. Now I can incorporate breaks and do other healthy things on commercials! That is a great tip!
