Question about the revised list...

  • I looked in the newbie handbook thread thingamajig, and in South Beach FAQ and couldn't find an answer...when was the list revised? Is there a new version of the book I should (or could) buy? We have both the SB Book and the SB Cookbook, but purchased them quite a while ago.

And from what I gathered from the revised this posted on here...it would be okay to have a Slimfast low-carb shake for breakfast, am I right? I have issues getting down food in the morning, and being able to have that would ensure that I got down nutrients and 190 calories right off in the morning.
  • The list on here is revised whenever Dr A makes a change. Normally, that change will be announced in the South Beach Diet Daily Dish. Some of the more recent changes appear to have been done so that Kraft could release some of their foods as South Beach approved. For instance, the cereals and bars would not have been allowed previously based on the "rules" of the program but now are since less fiber is required when choosing a cereal.

The cookbook has some of the revisions but not all. I do not believe that there is a new version of it that includes the revisions. The SB Book itself does have a new version with the revisions (and you can get it in paperback). There is also a new version of the Good Fats/Good Carbs guide that includes the revisions.

I'm not the best person to answer about the shake but maybe someone else can help.
  • Is Spaghetti squash considered a winter squash? I was planning on making it for dinner tomorrow night, bit I am now afraid it is not on phase 1?!?
  • spaghetti squash is a great squash and it used quite often in phase 1 as a substitute for pasta.

Here is the link to the latest phase 1 list. You can see that spaghetti squash is on it. http://www.3fatchicks.com/forum/showthread.php?t=49548
  • Thanks Barb! We're taking the kiddos to the mall this afternoon, I think I'll stop by the bookstore and try to pick up a copy of the new book.
  • This probably sounds really dumb but what exactly are the winter squashes? I know acorn and pumpkin are but what about butternut? I just bought a whole butternut squash since I thought it was legal.
  • I know that butternut is a winter squash. I looked online and found that spaghetti squash is too....I am so bummed.
  • I did some searching and here are a list of winter squash:
    acorn
    buttercup
    butternut
    hubbard
    spaghetti
    turban

Spaghetti squash is the only winter squash that is allowed in phase 1.
  • Really? YEAAAHHHH!!! Barb you are my new best buddy!!!
  • I learned that summer squashes were ones you could eat the skin and winter squashes were those you had to peal. It seems to be a good quick way to tell the difference.

  • Brilliant, Sarah!
  • Does anyone know about the slimfast shakes?
  • I'll see if I can find anything about the shakes. Are you in phase 1 or phase 2? Do you have the list of ingredients that are in them?
  • The last time I looked at the ingredients in slim fast sugar was like the third item listed. It has been a while since I used slim fast and I don't know if they have come out with a sugar free one or not but if they are still the same I would say they are not SB friendly.
  • I did manage to look at the slimfast website and it looks like there are three versions of the shakes. The original has sugar but I can't tell for sure about the Optima one. They have a low carb version that looks like it uses Splenda. But there is no list of ingredients - just a list of nutritional percentages - so I can't tell if they would be okay or not.
