"My Life as a Thin Person": Article in New York Magazine

  • I read this article in New York Magazine today and thought it was so fascinating, I had to post it.

The article focuses on people who have lost 100 pounds or more through bariatric surgery, but I think the psychological aspects of losing weight discussed here will ring familiar to anyone who has lost a significant amount of weight.

I'm curious to see what people think.
  • Wow, great article ...thanks for sharing!
  • absolutely spot-on
I read it yesterday too and thought it was eerily accurate, to the extent that I was thinking "wow, I hope so-and-so is not reading this!" LOL

The stuff about dating was especially true. That sentence about meeting someone in a bar and then spending a weekend in Europe? I did that! (OK, I met him on Nerve not in a bar but you see what I mean...)
  • Thanks....
    a good reminder ....

We all hear about knee/back/heart problems...
But I didnt realize until I read " Passing for Thin" that depending on the body frame/weight many, many overweight people cannot breathe well laying down... so are secretly sleeping propped up or in chairs....
the one lady who talked about having to get up and down the stairs on her hands and knees really hit home as my DH has asthma and I have heard the coughing when he comes up the stairs....

and I appreciate the emphasis the article place on social skills... although I was really only carrying about 20 extra pounds as a teenager, I FELT enormous and know my insecurities made lots of poor decisions for me....

Now that I am again that weight ( only 35 yrs later!) I marvel at how wonderful it is to be this size ............

Thanks for taking the time to post the article!
