Ranch Dressing and Mayo

  • Good Morning Beachers
I am on Phase 1 and I am a ranchaholic. Is is ok to have ranch on SB? I usually make it at home with a mix I get from Costco. If I make it at home, what kind of mayo should I use. Speaking of mayo can I have that...it didn't list it in the book...what about amounts??
    Help me please.

    Thanks
    Monica
  • I use Hidden Valley Ranch dressing. Mayo- reg. 1TBS Low Fat 2TBS (make sure it does not have high fructose corn syrup)
  • THANKS!!!
  • I think mayo's made with Canola/soybean oil, regular fat are OK in moderation- he talks about it a bit in the book (I forget where). He says if choosing between low-fat with lots of added sugars vs full fat, go with the full fat if the sat fat is low. I use the 'Canola' Best Foods (I guess that's Hellman's on the east coast) as it has less sat fat than the regular, but no more sugars.

I too am a ranchaholic and make my own as well. I use l/f buttermilk for the milk portion and f/f sourcream (I use Naturally Yours - it has no added sugars or starches) - I love it - nice and tangy.
  • Meanica, check out the ingredients of the mix you use to make your ranch. Some mixes have hydrogenated fats (big no-no!).

But yes, you can have any dressing made with good oils (soybean, canola, olive) that has 3 grams or less sugar. Hidden Valley packets have hydrogenated oil and sugar (I think? I can't remember what tipped me off about them...) so I just buy the premade. As long as you stick with a serving, the fat level isn't too bad.

Have you tried Hidden Valley's Spicy and BBQ Ranch flavors? Both are fantastic and SBD safe.
  • Mayonnaise
Duke's Mayonnaise is the only one on the market that does not contain sugar in any way, shape or form.

When I make my ranch from the mix, I use only half as much mayo and twice the fat free milk.

Also, with ranch dressing -- a little goes a long way. Put some in a small container next to your salad. Stick your fork in the dressing, then in the salad. You'll use a lot less and you wont' miss it one bit!

    Best of luck!

BTW, Duke's is made by the Sauer company. I don't know how far west or north it is available.

  • Points for Ranch Dressing dry mix??
How many points in Hidden Valley Ranch Dressing MIX?

Serving size: 1/2 tsp. Fiber 0, Cal 5, Fat 0, so 0 points. Right?

I make a big amount, using 3 TBS, so how many points would that be?
  • TexLady, this is the South Beach Diet Forum FAQ. We don't do points...perhaps you meant to post it in the WW forum?

Claire (and others), watch the pre-packaged dressing mixes. They often have hydrogenated fats (total no-no) and sugars, like dextrose. For instance, Hidden Valley is not acceptable. The bottled ranch dressings are usually fine (check the ingredients) but the mixes are trouble. Be careful.
