Bored with salads

  • Day 5 of phase 1 and already I'm bored with salads

I've had 4 different salads so I'm not eating the same everyday. But I just can't face the idea of another piece of cold water tasting piece of food.

So for those of you who have to take lunch with you to work what do you have? Is it just salads or is there something I don't know about?
  • Do you add anything to the salad? Like leftover chicken, or tuna, or chopped-up boiled egg? Today I mixed water-packed tuna with a little mayonnaise, and brought leaves of romaine lettuce to wrap around it.

I'm looking forward to hearing others' suggestions.

  • Yep.

Monday was Chicken. Tuesday and Wednesday were Tuna. Thursday was chicken and bacon.

It is the general taste and consistency of it that I just can't face.

Today I was bad. Had sushi
  • Try making that pizza recipe someone had. It sounds real good.

I'm only on day 2 of Phase 1 but I'm sure I'm going to get bored with salads too.
  • Do you have a microwave to reheat food? Some of the recipes that I fix for dinner and bring leftovers to lunch are Taco Bake and Crockpot Chili. Simple Eggplant Casserole is wonderful! I add mushrooms and zucchini to it along with the basic recipe. Add a can of Rotel if you like it a bit spicy or diced tomatoes if you don't.

I don't care for salads and rarely eat them. Although Taco Bake tastes wonderful over a bed of lettuce.

Lunch today is leftover 5Spice Chicken (recipe from the cookbook). This is a fast recipe cooked in the microwave. If you leave out the teaspoon of cornstarch or substitute arrowroot, it would be fine for phase 1. I have it with Mushroom Medley which has mushrooms, red pepper strips, green onions, spinach, soy sauce, ginger and lots of other yummy stuff. I fixed this with rice last night in under 30 minutes. You could serve it over cabbage that has been lightly cooked in the microwave for phase 1.
  • How about trying soup? It's like a hot salad! Use a flavourful broth and lots of veggies. I can totally sympathize with the disdain for salads. Sometimes the cold, raw veggies just lose their appeal.
  • Hi

There lots of thing to have instead of a salad. Tuna fish/broccoli casserole.or any other protein and veggie mixture. There alot of south beach diet recipes on this forum or others. Hugs BB
  • I don't belive that you have to have salad every time. It's just veggies that they are looking for. Salad is just an easy way to get in all your veggies.
  • The deep dish pizza is awesome for lunch!!! mmmmmm.. oh and so is Taco bake.
I even have people at work asking for the receipts because they looked so good, and they’re not even on the SBD. I sometimes take the crestless quiche to work, just depending on what I feel like that day.
  • I have a salad once a week. Otherwise, I eat leftovers from the night before. Do you have a microwave at work? If not, you might try some of the following ideas:
    • Cold chicken salad (as in chicken with mayo and celery, nuts, etc) along with peppers, cucumber, etc. dipped in hummus.
    • Spice rubbed chicken (see recipe in SBD cookbook, I think) cold, dipped in tzatziki (see the recipe in the forum) along with broccoli and cauliflower dipped in SBD safe dressing or one of the many dips in the recipe forum.
    • lettuce rollups with roast beef and blue cheese, or thin slices of london broil with horseradish sauce (Kraft makes a prepared one in a squeeze bottle that's SBD safe) along with veggies and dip.
    • I also find that a taco salad (without the chips) doesn't feel like a salad to me, especially after I load it down with meat and beans. Yum! I love the Fantastic Foods brand "taco filling" made with soy...it takes about 10 minutes tops to cook on the stove, and it makes enough for two taco salads, so I freeze half. You could easily add that to a salad to take to work.

Hope this helps...things are much more interesting if you have access to a microwave. Then you can have a plethora of leftovers. You can also look for SBD safe soups (I've found Lentil to be a good choice).

I've heard so many people say that they stopped SBD because they got sick of salads. Though salads are enjoyable once in a while, I [i]firmly[/] believe you can do SBD for years without ever eating a salad if you don't want to. Get creative! You can do this!
