High Calcium Diet Boost Weight Loss

  • Good....I got your attention. I've been reading that increasing the amount of yogurt, skim milk and lowfat cottage cheese into snacks throughout the day can help you loose those suck #'s. I noticed that Dannon has put out the Light & Fit yogurt in small 6 packs. It might just be something to try. I read about this in WW mag, and I'm reading an article in First that has menus for this high calcium diet. Of course it says to eat all the fruits and veggies that you can, so I think it may work into my WW plan.

I'm so sick of these last 5# I could die!

  • Good topic! Would anyone happen to know approximately how much calcium is in cottage cheese?
  • The cottage cheese we have in our fridge is a store brand, Harris Teeter, 1% milkfat,

1/2 cup, 90 calories, 1.5 grams of fat
& 6% calcium. (Doesn't seem like much calcium).

The Breyers Light Fat Free Yogurt has 20% calcium.

    Hope this helps.

  • I hate to be the bearer of bad news but cottage cheese doesn't have enough calcium in it to be counted as a calcium product..Although it can be counted toward your protein..
  • also something to think about: cottage cheese has a relatively high sodium content (a concern for me as i love salty foods). so, if sodium is an issue, you might choose yogurt or nonfat milk as your calcium source. other great sources include (i do this for a living): firm tofu, figs, salmon, molasses, dark green vegetables, hummus, beans, squash, hard cheese and any of the fortifed foods (cereal, oatmeal, juice). adult women should get 1000 mg of calcium a day. make sure to get adequate vitamin D also--it's calcium booster!
  • That one person, was right. Cottage Cheese does not have much calcium. But it has a heck of a lot of protein for very little points. So there's much value in cottage cheese. Protein is important too.

As for High Calcium boosting weight loss. I've read that too. But I don't need much convincing. I love Dannon lite yogurt, skim milk with my cereal, and those 1 point 2% milk cheese slices put out by Kraft. One slice of that baby is 25% calcium-you've knocked off a milk requirement right there.

Also- the Weight Watcher Hot Cocoa Mix, and Alba or Weight Watcher Chocolate Fudge Shakes have a sufficient amount of calcium for just one point.

Harmony Cereal- wheter you want to have 1 serving which is 1 1/4 cups- and a whopping 4 points- or you can take just a wee bit over 1/2 a cup for 2 points- either amount will give you enough calcium to meet a milk requirement.

Don't forget the Tropicana calcium fortified orange juice. Very good. It takes care of a milk and fruit at the same time.

Then there's calcium fortified V-8 juice- no points- but loads of calcium.

Just about all the Power Bars, or other brands of Nutrition Bars- Atkins Advantage as well- have more than enough calcium. (except-the Go-Lean- big dissapointment-no calcium at all)

So explore all the possiblities. Your on to a good thing.
  • Keep in mind though, that if you take iron supplements you should take them separately from any calcium (i.e. don't wash down iron supplements with milk or calcium fortified OJ) as calcium blocks the absorption of iron...I found out the hard way...by getting more and more anemic!
How 'bout those viactivs? 2 of them = 1 point
