New Exercise Guidelines

  • The recommened amount of physical activity on most days is 60-90 minutes. They recommend 90 minutes for those who struggle with easy weight gain.

Just heard about this on my local news.

I thought I did good doing 45 minutes of cardio today, guess I need to start doing more.
  • It's kind of funny, many experts used to recommend 30 minutes a day just to maintain health, but surveys showed that only a small percentage of people actually managed that much. So they decided that moderate housework and other regular tasks could be included in the 30 minutes, but surveys showed people STILL weren't getting it!

I'm really glad they have increased the recommendations, but hope we can all find ways to fit it into our schedules. So many people say they don't have time, and sometimes it is hard to find time. However, the average woman spends 30 hours per week watching television. We should replace our easy-chairs with treadmills
  • To be honest, I thought too that it'd be very hard to commit to "so much exercising", when I began taking my health back in hands earlier this year. Even though I have lots of time compared to other people (I work part time and from home), I have a constant panic feeling about "not having enough time" - no idea where this is coming from, as it is totally irrational and I know it; maybe it's still a reminiscence from a little over 1 year ago, when I had to travel 3-4 hours everyday to go and come back from work, and when time was *really* an issue.

Anyway - What I did was trying to relativize and see things differently. I told myself, for instance, that if I was able to spend 5 hours in a row during whole evenings, until 1-2 am, in an online game, then surely I could find 2 hours to drive to the gym and squeeze cardio or weight-lifting in this. It was more a matter of finding a type of exercise I would like; this way, I'd feel like going for the pleasure, and this worked. So, alright, I gave up on some computer time, but I feel so much better now that I just couldn't care less about not playing games or whatever.

Plus I also suppose that "90 mins of exercise" doesn't necessarily mean "90 mins at the gym". If one spends 45 mins at the gym and then takes 2 walks of 20-25 mins with the dog, or walking/taking the bike to work instead of the car, etc etc, it's also exercising, right?
  • i wouldn't get discouraged or feel overwhelmed. i lost all of my weight with about 30 minutes of excercise a day. on the weekends and when the weather was nice, i got a lot more in but on average it was only about 30 min a day.

since i've lost all the weight i want to lose, i have started working out for an hour or more a day and i have to say, i feel much more rewarded after a longer workout. short ones feel like warm ups now.
  • This probably sounds stupid but.. are daily activities included in that 90 minutes? It's just that 90 minutes is such a long time and I was struggling trying to fit in 30. So what's better, 5 hours sleep and 90 minutes exercise or 6 hours sleep and 30 minutes exercise? I've been doing it just 3 times a week..

And what kind of exercise are they talking about anyway? Weights, cardio.. I mean.. "housework" could be technically "exercise" by some definitions..

I don't even know what I could possibly do for 90 minutes each day that won't bore me to death.

No, I'm not complaining. They're probably right. But I just want to know the details. I still doubt I can do that much.
