So I want to start weight training but am wondering if Pilates and other such methods count as weight training.
THe thing is, I have a 2 yo at home and also a 3 wks old baby boy so going to the gym to use the equipement is out of the question for a little while yet .In the meantime, I want to strenghthen and get fit but I don't own any weight equipement..soooooo..can I use pilates instead to build muscle?

Pilates is a type of strength exercise, but not exactly the same as weight training. Starting with Pilates is definitely worthwhile. If you decide you do want to explore more weight training, you DO NOT have to own a lot of equipment or go to the gym. There are lots of videos out there that just use dumbells that you can buy very cheaply if you don't go for the fancy chrome ones. For example, I started weight training with Kathy Smith's Lift Weights to Lose Weight video. She has since come out with a second volume that is also great.
You can also start with things using your own body weight like pushups and triceps dips (on couch or chair). If you want to do bicep curls etc and don't have dumbells use soup cans or filled water bottles. These are all good first steps and there are so many resources online with basic weight training tips. Pilates is wonderful and good for core strength but it won't replace weight lifting.
