New here with a few ??'s

  • Hi,
I'm 38 and was diagnosed with PCOS last June. I have 4 children and have carried one more thru gestational surrogacy for a friend. It was while pursuing another surrogacy that I was diagnosed.
I guess looking back it was all there but I never had a Dr. put a lable on it. I'm about 29lbs over wieght and have been most of my adult life. I have cystic acne, thyriod issues, facial hair and I didn't start my period till I was 16. My first child was a fertility pill baby @26.
Ok thats my history and here's some of my questions. I go for a glutose test tommorow to see if I'm insulin resistant. If I am what should I expect next? What questions should I ask? I already have a appt. on 2/4 with my endocrinologist for my thyriod. My gyn is having all my results sent to him. How does insulin resistance affect your period?? I started having 14 day cycles and thats what led to the new tests.
I know PCOS is a female disorder but do any of you have brothers with simular complications?? I had never heard of a fatty liver untill I started to do research for me tonight but my brother was just told he has a fatty liver about 2 months ago. He does drink and has cut back but since PCOS does tend to run in families can the men in our families have some of the symptoms?? My father, 3 brothers and 2 sisters ( I'm one of eleven children) also have had cystic acne but I'm the only one diagnosed with PCOS. And now the fatty liver thing? Is there a conection??
I know I will have more ??'s but will stop there to regroup since my brain seams to be on overdrive tonight.
Thanks in advance for any insights, opinions, personal experiences or information.

  • Hi

Sorry no one has replied to your post. I didn't get any responses to my first post a few days earlier either.

I have heard there is something called syndrome X that affects men and women that is similar to PCOS. You might check it out.

I have 4 children too. I was DX'd in 2002. After 6 years trying to conceive my 4th. My OB/Gyn put me on Glucophage after my tests came back with IR. My symptoms are moderate acne, belly fat, trouble losing weight, irregular or non-existent periods, dark patches,etc..I think I have most symptoms except for hair issues. I also have hashimoto's thyroiditis and take levoxyl for that. I just started taking my gluc again after being lax on it since the birth of my youngest. I believe it is was helped me to get pg. I am not TTC anymore but it has helped me also with IR issues and AF.

I frequent a site you may or may not know about called soulcysters. It is a forum dedicated to pcos'ers. You might check it out if you haven't already.

    Blessings,
    Robin
