Underactive Thyriod

  • Hi Ladies

I'm a newbie to this forum, just registered yesterday.

Meme, I am sooooooo sorry to hear about the loss of your hard work, I know this must be devastation for you.

Ally, how's your son doing now? I missed it, how old is he?

A little bit about myself. I am a working Mum from Sydney with 3 kiddies, 2 boys and a girl, aged 7, 4 1/2 and nearly 3. My hubby is self employed working is hours around the kiddies.

My biggest problem I believe is my underactive thyroid. About 2 1/2 years ago my thryoid gland packed it in on my and just stopped working. I piled on about 25 lbs in a matter of months because my metabolism had slowed right down. Prior to that I had gained about 20 lbs just from having 3 kids in 4 years <silly me lol>. Does anyone else have this sort of problem? I'm after some tips on how to try and lose weight with an underactive thyroid gland. I take 100mg of thyroxine, the Aussie equivalent of Sythnoid, daily.

    Thanks in advance
    Dani
  • Hello!
    Hi there,

I went with an undiagnosed underactive thyroid for about 5 years. In that time, I gained about 65 lbs ontop of the 30 I already needed to lose. I'm now being treated (112 mcg synthroid daily) and I'm very very slowly losing weight (0.5 lbs/week on average). I attend weight watchers, eat a mostly vegetarian diet and work out regularly.

    Hang in there!
  • Hi Dani and Polly,

I also have an underactive thyroid. Mine was diagnosed when I couldn't get pregnant with my third child. As soon as the Dr. found out about it, I immediately started taking meds and was pregnant the next month. That was almost 7 years ago. I have gained weight with each of my 3 pregnancies and have lost it right away, only to gain it all back again. I'm currently 200 lbs at 5'4" and want to lose 70 lbs. I take 175 mcg of synthroid each day.

I have always wondered if it would be more difficult to lose the weight with the thyroid problem or if meds help to stabilize the metabolism so that losing weight is no more difficult than it would otherwise be (lets face it - it's tough enough without adding other problems). I joined WW yesterday and, boy am I hungry. I'm drinking my water and counting my points and looking forward to dropping some pounds soon. I also plan on starting a regular walking routine with our new pooch.

Take care, both of you, and have a great day!!

    Brenda
