Is Couscous really a core food?

  • I am in my first week on the Core plan and noticed that Couscous is one of the core foods while wheat pasta is restricted to 1x per day? Does anyone know if this is accurate? When I checked the ingredients for both items the main ingredient is Semolina so now I am very confused
  • It's okay. Don't be confused. When you analyze the information it seems to be contradictory. However, my guess is that WW found that people ordinarily do not binge on Couscous and that's why they made it available to WW's on Core. I hope you like Core and stay with it. I think it's a lovely program that is helping me to lose weight. Good luck to you!

  • yes, somehow I can't imagine myself loosing control eating couscous...pasta now that I could loose control with.
  • I threw some in my chili last night - not bad . . . made it more filling.
  • I had couscous today with lunch. I wanted a flour tortilla, but settled for leftover couscous as my bread product. I made it with garlic and it was really good.
  • What the heck IS couscous, anyway? I live in a small city in Saskatchewan, Canada, and can't find it! Or ff cheese...!!
  • couscous is usually with the grains. I find mine in small boxes next to barely and rice. HTH! And for ff cheese, I can get shredded cheddar that is ff and the rest I have to buy the slices (like kraft) to get ff swiss and mozarella and ones like that. they don't sell ff blocks of cheese around here either. Hope you can find some!
  • Couscous is a pasta but it's like little tiny balls of pasta that cook really fast and is very filling - like rice. I found it on the pasta/rice aisle (more expensive) and in the bulk food section (much cheaper) @ Winco. It's also so much better if cooked with broth instead of water.

I was very happy to see it on the Core plan.
  • I really want to try it, (couscous) but have had absolutely no luck finding it. And I would really love to bump into some ff cheese- even the soy cheese is super high in calories and fat!
  • Saskie Mom,

I am from Alberta and the only FF cheese I have seen is the slices.

I found the couscous next to the hot cereals (if you can believe it). It is a nice change from pasta or rice, and a little goes a long way.

Speaking of hot cereal, I am also ejoying Red River cereal. It is Wheat, rye and flax. Nothing else added. It keeps me full the whole morning.
  • Oh, Red River Cereal! My DH discovered this years ago while working at a camp in Northern Ontario. Ever since we've bought some every time we get to Canada. Love it. This year in Whitehorse, YT we found an instant Red River. Boy was I disappointed to find it was an oat based cereal and not as good as Quaker instant oatmeal.
  • My Kroger store sells Red River cereals in the natural foods section. The 10 grain is wonderful.
  • Red River in the box? (as opposed to bulk cereals, of which we have a large variety). I haven't seen it, but the next time I get to a bigger store I'll look. (I live in a small town, with a correspondingly small grocery - have to go 30-40 miles for a larger one).
  • Hmmm, I will have to pick up some Red River. I have seen it but never tried it! I will also look there for couscous. I remember seeing some a long time ago, when I was counting pts, but did not buy any because it was one of those kinds you just add water & margarine to and was high in fat, pts, etc... Anyway, thanks for the tip!
