Well I know I'm new to this site but I decided to add this thread for everyone who had this particular surgery done. I had it done July 9th, 2004. Becides the pain and not eating what I used to, I FEEL GREAT. I would like this thread to be shared amongst people who've been through the surgery, who would like to have it done, for peope who have problems, or for people who want advice. Well Pookie88, I had mine done in July and boy have I had the cravings you've just stated. My whole thing through it was to just smell the food, put it back and turn away. Another thing is to try to keep youself busy. What do you like to do with your spare tiem? Hopefully it's not thinking about eating some kind of food that you can't. But whatever it might be, try to do it so you can keep your mind off of the cravings. Try this and see how it helps. I go on the computer, play video games, watch movies. But I am also 25 years old. Hi changedman and pookie... I had mine done June 23rd and went through the cravies too. But, now I am the opposite. I am not hungry at all. No interest in eating and I am having problems even eating, let alone getting in all my protein. And... my tast buds have changed. When I do crave something and try a little to indulge myself I find it is nasty and I am not interested in it.

Also found that my long term medication for my back was a problem causing nausea. So if you have any kind of problem you have to look deep. I'd been on that pain med for 5 years with no trouble.

The good news is I have lost 70 pounds now. Only 130 to go.

Pookie, I experience alot of brain hunger.....guess thats why I get alot of brain farts Seriously, you couldn't be more right (meaning its mental), most of my eating is lack of knowing how to do anything else but run to food first.

Wow! I just wanna say thank you, so far right now, for the way this thread has been going. I had a good feelign about this. Again, thank you.
I too have had (and still do a little bit) those 'head cravings.' They were worse in the beginning, but they have subsided. I found that by eating more of the right foods got my 'head craving' to subside.
The 60 lbs. that I have lost within the first month is because I was told that men lose the weight quicker than women do. But that also means to keep myself from becoming malnutritioned (if thats a word ). Well I wish each and everyone of you the best of luck.

Hi changedman...it is nice to meet you! Yankees or Mets? Hey...sometimes a jersey girl has just gotta do what a jersey girl has to do!!!!

I am a year out and I remember after my surgery I didn't have any cravings but I did mourn food for a few months. I didn't really have an appetite so to speak but I did miss terribly the fun of having large quantities of food because heck, it was just so much fun to do. I remember watching the food network for a long time. My excuse was that I was getting ideas for the Holidays when truth be known I was just missing all those good eats.

Thankfully at this point I can usually eat just about anything and don't really get sad over the large volume of food that I could happily pack away a year ago. Luckily I know that I can have a little bit of whatever (except ice cream and onions ....and no, not together) in a few hours. Food is always right around the corner and I don't HAVE to HAVE it ALL right now. What a liberating feeling!

YANKEES. Hello peach pit and welcome to the thread. You live in Jersey as well? Yankees or Mets? Anyway, let's start something. Let us all talk about (without getting too personal) the different steps you had to take before the surgery. Also, what made all of you decide to do it? Lastly, how long were all of you thinking about getting it done before you actually got it done.

I have a Dr. apt tomorrow to discuss gastric bypass surgery. I am a 5'4 25 yr old female and weigh 260 lbs. I already know that I qualify for the surgery after talking to my insurance company, and I am so happy to find out that it will be covered 100 %!
Any advice from people that have already had the surgery? How bad is the scaring and the pain? Also do you need to stay on specific vitamins forever? I am very excited, but also nervous. I have no health problems now, and I feel lucky for that, and I don't want to develop any, that is why I am going to have the surgery. I've never had a surgery before and don't know what to expect.
