Warning for newbies...

  • and anyone else using the recipe boards. I was making a recipe from the boards and I wondered how they make ff half n half so thick so I checked the label and they use CORN SYRUP. So I just threw out a mixture of eight eggs and a quart of half n half, I am making the same recipe using evaporated skim milk so will let you know how it turns out. Don't know about you but I usually don't have three dollars to just pour down the sink. Not blaming anyone but me I should have read the label before I purchased it. So just cautioning people to read your labels and check out the ingredients in the recipes carefully before eating it don't just assume it is okay cuz it is on the recipe board.

I know it sounds extreme to some of you that I threw it out but I saw corn syrup in the milk as an invitation to cravings that I have not had to deal with so far.
  • Are you talking about the ff half and half? Limited amounts of it are allowed. I don't really understand why since it has the corn syrup in it, but it is. Hopefully somebody else here can say how much is allowed - that part I'm not sure about.
  • Thanks for the information. I just didn't want to take the chance. I need to purchase the little handbook with the allowed foods in it as right now I only have the book and it doesn't say anything about half n half at all.
  • Use evaporated skim instead of cream. It works fine. All that';s in it is skim milk!
  • Bunna, small amounts of sugars are okay because they don't cause cravings. We're talking about no more than 2 Tbsp. With that much half n half, you probably would have had cravings. What recipe was it? If it turned into something like 8 servings, it would have been fine.

I don't get why they are allowed, but they do seem to work. I don't get cravings from the Cool Whip Free, which is basically corn syrup and water. I did not like the taste of the fat free half n' half, so I just use real half n' half the couple of times that I have wanted some in my coffee. Just a tablespoon of it, though, so I don't get too much of the bad fats.

It's a toss up...fats or sugars, with things like that. But for recipes, the evaporated milk is a great idea!
  • The recipe I made turned out great using the evaporated skim milk, the quiche recipe on the breakfast board. So I guess if I wanted to it would have been okay cuz divided into eight portions the one cup of half n half would have been 2 T. per serving. I was just scared to risk it cuz I have been doing so well without cravings. Good information to have though. I am going to have to get the Good Carbs, Good Fats book I guess so I know better what I am doing. I know he changes things occasionally like bananas but I figure I can just mark the book up when that happens.

Thanks all for the advice and help.
