Hi, all! I've been looking for a while now for a low-sugar spaghetti sauce to have with the portobello and goat cheese recipe in the new SB cookbook or with spaghetti squash. I can't seem to find any that are specifically labeled to be low-sugar, and the lowest sugar content I can seem to find is about 5 grams.

Have any of you had any luck locating something like this? What brand?

I have had no luck with this either. There is a recipe for spaghetti sauce in the cookbook, which I am planning on trying this week. It would sure make life easier if we didn't have to make it ourselves, wouldn't it? Does anyone know of a commercial one? Even the organic ones in our health food section have organic versions of sugar.

Thanks! I must have missed the recipe in the book. I'll have to search for it tonight. But you're right, I am kinda tired of doing everything from scratch. I miss all those quickie pasta and rice mixes and instant everything. It's hard to find the energy to make something every night.

And the "fuzzy" comes from Get Fuzzy. I am a big fan of the comic strip.

I love Get Fuzzy, too...but we do not get it in our paper. Sometimes I go find it online just to catch up. Do you read Pearls Before Swine? You can find it at www.comics.com (I believe Fuzzy is there too). A couple weeks ago they sent their beligerant character, Rat, to learn how to be a cute and fuzzy comic strip character. He ended up a deliquent along with the cat from Get Fuzzy (whose name is escaping me right now...Bucky, maybe?) I thought that was hilarious!

I agree about making everything from scratch. However, when I get totally frustrated with it all, I think about what a coworker told me. She read Dr. Phil's book and he said that our "instant food" society has a lot to do with our weight gain. He notes that some biological things happen to your body as you prepare food that make it easier for us to digest nutrition and produce less fat. I'm not sure of the scientific background, but I think it makes sense. Back in the day, it took a long time to hunt/plant, kill/gather, prepare, and eat, and I bet our systems are wired to deal with that type of procedure rather than drive through, pay, eat. You know? Sometimes that makes me feel better as I cut up yet another onion.

I have to visit the comics website daily for my Get Fuzzy dose b/c we don't get the paper. I just took a look at Pearls Before Swine at the website, and Sunday's strip was a riot. It cracks me up the way couples even hold their nonverbals against each other.... Gotta say my hubby and I are guilty on that front.

I hear ya on the cooking everyday!! I hate the mess that comes from scratch cooking and its so time consuming. Spaghetti sauce is pretty easy though, I just throw some tomatoe sauce in a sauce pan with some basil and oregano and garlic and voila'!! I get the kind of garlic that is already minced and in a jar so that makes it easier.

I got some whole wheat rotini pasta today I'm thinking of having some for supper and I'll just freeze the leftover sauce

I haven't tried it but would the carb options spaghetti sauce be allowed on this plan? I think it has only 1 or 2 carbs (if that) per serving. I don't know if this would apply.

Actually, I just found the Carb Options sauce tonight (as I spent a full 10 minutes in the pasta/sauce aisle reading labels ). It has 4 g of sugar which is at least 1 g better than what I had found previously. Looks like the 4.5 g fat comes from the olive oil and romano cheese in it...no trans or hydrogenated stuff. I have not tried it yet, but I'll be sure to update yas when I do!

I think Hunt's has one or two canned spaghetti sauces that are low sugar.

Hey, Fuzzy. Glad to know I'm not the only one without quality comic strips in her paper! I'm glad you liked Pearls. I find it tremendously amuzing! My favorites are those that involve puns.

Sounds like there are a couple of low sugar sauces out there...but are they low enough? I think for now I might try making my own. But can I successfully freeze the sauce? If not, I will be buying the jarred kind, sugar and all.

Mauvais, I was just going to post re Hunt's Tomato sauce! You could jazz it up a bit with garlic, onion and extra herbs. Yes, it freezes perfectly, beachgal!

Cool! I think I'm going to put spaghetti squash on the menu for next week.

It is pretty easy making your own tomato sauce by using a can of tomatoes (dice them) and a spoon of tomato paste. I cook the vegies (onion, garlic, mushroom, zucchini, capsicum or whatever) then add the tomato, season with salt and pepper, and add fresh or dried herbs. I make enough to have leftovers for lunch the next day. This is my main cooked vegie dish at the moment (eating salads lots still) and it is really quick and easy.

I use a can of tomato paste and a cup-and-a-half of water. Contadina now has flavored tomato pastes, which makes it a lot easier. (Though not nearly as much fun; my usual spaghetti sauce is tomato paste, water, garlic powder, onions, mushrooms, & chopped broccoli.) Also, I have found I like diced canned tomatoes (which also come in flavored varieties) with artichoke hearts a lot more than any actual spaghetti sauce. I don't mind making spaghetti sauce from scratch; I've been doing it for years. I can buy a can of tomato paste for 33 cents, or a jar of spaghetti sauce for about ten times that; to me the choice was obvious.

The Classico spaghetti sauce does not list any sugar on the ingredients list. I have been using it and it has not caused me any problems. You just have to watch the other ingredients (ie full fat cheeses etc).
