Brand new to the Beach

  • Hello to you all. I have been doing SB for about 10 days now, sugessted by my Endocrinologist. When I was about 4 days into the new way of eating she called and gave me the results of my blood test. I have something called Insulin Resistance. My insulin should be below 17 but mine is actually 55. So she put me on Metformin

The drugstore had to spot me 6 Glucophage cuz they were out of the generic (called Metformin) and when I started taking them I had a major adversion to food in general. Then after being on them about 4 days and starting the Metformin the absolute nausea went away.

Still, I don't have much of an appetite (which is very abnormal for me). I wondered if that was because of the low carbing or because of the meds?

I actually feel like I have a more normal appetite now. Never have been this nonchalant about food before.

Are any of you insulin resistant? I feel like I have been this way most of my life and feel glad to have finally been diagnosed.

I have lost over 10 lbs on SB so far. I read the book and believe it totally. It makes so much sense to me now.
I've dieted all my life and could not keep it off. Now I know why. The foods I have been avoided are the ones I should have been eating. The ones I have been eating I should have ran far away from.

So here I am. Always open to advice. Looking forward to the support I can receive here and hoping I will also learn to be helpful to you all.
  • I'machocoholic2 - Welcome to the Beach!! I too am insulin ressistant. I have been on metformin for sometime now. When you first start out on it you will not be as hungry or at least I was that way and I still have to eat food before I take my meds or I get nausea. Congrads on the 10 pound!!! that is great!

I see you're from Georgia too!
This is a great board all the chicks are real supportive here. So pull up a chair and get your shades on it's time to catch some rays!!!
  • Welcome to the Beach!!
  • He there and welcome to the Board. My good pal Doc Bob is an endocrinologist who recommends this plan to his patients. I too am on Metformin. It does cut back your appetite a bit at first. Good going on losing ten pounds.
  • Welcome to the beach.
  • Hi all! Nice to meet you! I am so glad to have found this board and the SB diet. Before my doc recommended it one of my friends had started it with good results.

Ruth, I sure hope it continues to cut my appetite. Mine was waaaaaay too big before. I like being in control of my appetite. I feel kinda normal.

I lost 57 lbs on WW, started 11/2000 and kept about 45 lbs of it off until this past April. Thats when I started gaining no matter what I tried. I have lost weight many times but always gained it back again. Here's to hoping that this time will be different. I kinda have a feeling that it will be.
  • Hey welcome to the beach! I hope you enjoy your stay here.
  • Hi there and welcome! I have not had any diagnosis around insulin resistance etc, but I do notice how I am not hungry provided that I stick to the good carbs only, so that makes me think that the insulin spiking thing must have something in it.
  • Hi again and thanks for the nice warm welcomes!
I too notice that high glycemic foods seem to really affect me in a bad way. Now that I've read the SB book it makes alot of sense. Just wished I would have figured it out ages ago. Also in Novemeber of last year my heart started pounding and my blood pressure went up. Now they have me on Toprol XL and Diovan and also Lasix plus the Metformin. I want to be able to come off of some of the meds. I have to see a cardio dr in March.
    Anyway, I ramble and ramble.......lol

    Thanks again!
  • Hey, more Georgians! (I'm in Lawrenceville)

I've never been tested for IR, but I'm pretty sure it's there. I'm glad to see your nausea has subsided, as many of my friends on gluc/met have it the entire time they take it. Way to go on the loss!
