Other books besides Dr. Phil?

  • Hi - I'm new here and I really like that there is a book group. I love to read! I notice that most of the posts refer to the Dr. Phil book, which I thought wasn't that great. I've probably missed thousands of posts about other books - where can I go to read them? Does the group have a top 10 list of books? Do individual members have non-Dr Phil favorites? Thanks!

  • Hi, and welcome to 3FC!

The book club forum is fairly new, and have only done Dr Phil's book until last week, when we started on Eat Drink and Be Healthy We did have an extensive list of posts regarding other books, but we recently had a massive server crash and lost 2 months worth of posts I'm looking forward to this forum growing
  • My post got lost in the Big Crash...

Here's my short list of must-read books on fat...just off the top of my head.

Fat of the Land: The Obesity Epidemic and How Overweight Americans Can Help Themselves by Michael Fumento (published 1997). GREAT book and I've quoted it often here at 3FC. Some of the info is rather old now (as the book was published 7 years ago, after all!) but there is still some pretty meaty stuff in there. I have emailed Mr. Fumento and implored him to update and publish a revised version of this book - IMO it came out a few years before people started to 'catch on' to what he was saying. Unfortunately he is not planning on a new edition - however, he still writes terrific articles on this and other topics, which he posts at his website www.fumento.com (if you want a chuckle, check out the 'hate mail' section )

Diary of a Fat Housewife by Rosemary Green (1994 hardcover/1996 PB) Not really a diet book, and is out of print (however, you can find plenty of used copies on amazon and half.com - get the paperback over the first edition hardcover if you can). It's a facinating book - a 10-year diary of a woman who was a beauty queen as a high school student, got married, and began to yo-yo her way (through 7 or 8 pregancies) to well over 300 pounds. Sometimes reading this book, I get really ticked off, other times I feel sympathy for her. Just an interesting read - I wonder what Rosemary's doing these days?

The Hungry Gene: The Science of Fat and The Future of Thin by Ellen Ruppel Shell (2002). VERY interesting book looking at obesity and what science is trying to do to alleviate the epidemic. Some parts of the book lag, but others - such as the WLS patient and a look at a remote island in the South Pacific where almost 100% of the population is obese, diabetic, etc due to subsiting on American processed food - are meaty reading to say the least!

Well that's my short list for this am...
  • Other books
Thanks for your help, everyone. I've read those first two books, but it sounds like I'd like to read the third.

  • Almost forgot another one of my faves - Thin for Life : 10 Keys to Success from People Who Have Lost Weight and Kept It Off by Anne Fletcher. This is one of the VERY FEW books out there (at least that I've come across) which deals with maintenance - a topic that has been overlooked too often IMO. (check out the Maintainers Forum here at 3FC). Both Meg (mod at Maintainers) and I are members of the National Weight Control Registry - the organization where Ms. Fletcher found the 160 'weight loss masters' that she surveyed for her book (people who had lost a minimum of 20 pounds and kept the weight off for 3 years or more). Some good stuff in here
  • my posts got lost in the crash . i recommend any of richard simmons books. i read his biography, still hungry after all these years. it dealt with his personal battle with obesity. it also had very large heapings of richard's sense humor. i also recommend dieting for dummies. how about the choice is yours by dr. howard j. rankin? how about the tops way to weight loss-beyond calories and aerobics also by dr. rankin?
  • There was a time when I had spent lots of time reading all kinds of different diet books. Not any more. the time has come for me to stop reading books and start reading labels on food. I also spend lots of time reading all kinds of information about nutrition over the internet. Not only that, the Dr. Phil Web site has tons of information. Just gotta dig to find it.
  • welcome partytime! this is a great group to post with!
