I'm wondering if anyone else has all these conditions at once, and wondering how they are all related. I was first diagnosed with PCOS at age 16, weighed in at 165 through high school, but managed to lose it as a freshman in college and keep it off until about 12 years ago, when I started to gain. Then about 8 years ago I started having really long excruciating migraines, with a more or less constant aura.
Now, since I've been eating better, I noticed the aura has gone, and my only migraine in the last 27 days was after two glasses of red wine about a week ago. Even then, the migraine didn't even last a whole day. Well, yeah me, but why, and how? The only thing I've really cut out of my diet is sugar in any form, all the "bad carbs." But I've also noticed if I try to exclude all carbs, I get hypoglycemic very easily, and have far less energy for exercise. (I keep a food/exercise/symptom journal.)
So my question is, obviously there is a big insulin/blood sugar factor of PCOS, but is migraine involved in the insulin "transaction" too? Is migraine a cause, or effect, or is there some subtle metabolic reaction going on?
I really want to understand this better. I'm willing to forego wine or whatever for the rest of my life if need be, but I feel like I'm thrashing around in the dark, and the PCOS books don't seem to address this issue directly. My doctor is very supportive, but it's a family practice, and they don't have a deep knowledge of PCOS.
Thanks in advance for any help!
P.S. On the good side, I just got my bloodwork back, and my cholesterol is 177 with HDL at 51 and blood sugar at 88! That's down from 244 total cholesterol last year. Happy Dance Time!
