Whoppers without Buns

  • Hi I am just stopping by for a quick visit from my usual WLS forum:

When I signed on to AOL today I saw a story saying that starting next Tuesday all
BURGER KINGS will be offering Whoppers without buns for those watching their CARBS.

The Whopper without bun will come in a Plastic Bowl with a knife and fork. In the next couple of months they will also be offering Salads with Shrimp or Chicken and eventually Steak too.
    Bye for now. --POOKIE
  • pookie, hardees already has a low carb burger but it doesn't come in a bowl. it is placed between two pieces of lettuce. real hard to eat in the car.
  • Wendys and McD's will give it to you with out a bun!1 and wendys will give you a sald if you ask instead of the fries!!
  • yes you are definately right about that.
  • Sue: I guess they will now have to add SALAD to their "do you want Fries (or Salad) with that?" question.

Chequitagirl: I can imagine how SLIPPERY that Hardees burger in Lettuce can be in the car !! You are a dedicated low-carber!

This was another low-carb story attached to the Whopper without bun story:

In a sign that low-carb dieting may be more than just a passing fad, marketing giant Unilever is launching a line of 18 new low-carbohydrate products hitched to some of its most venerable brand names.

Dubbed "Carb Options," the new line includes carbohydrate-conscious relatives of Skippy peanut butter, Ragu spaghetti sauce and Wishbone salad dressing, along with other condiments, spreads, snacks and shakes.

Costly and risky, Unilever's move is a measure of how far into the mainstream the hot low-carb diet trend has moved. An estimated 30 million to 50 million people are carb-conscious, according to Unilever, which figures the low-carb category could generate as much as $1 billion in sales in 2005.

Separately, snack-food giant Frito-Lay, a unit of PepsiCo Inc., is expected to announce Wednesday the launch of low-carb Doritos and Tostitos tortilla chips, containing 60% fewer carbs than the regular chips. Bye, Pookie
  • Can you imagine the slimey gross mess that hamburger would make in a plastic bowl????? YUCK! Besides if Im going to eat a whopper, you better be giving me a bun with it! (something has to soak up that grease)
  • While I think all these new low carb versions of everyday products will be so much more convenient, I'm not sure some of them will really be helpful to someone that wants to lose weight. For example, the Doritos. Who really eats a serving of 10 or 12 chips? I eat the whole bag. Just because it's low carb, it still will add on pounds if you eat too much.
I am loving the idea of salad dressing available in more flavors and low carb. Right now, I make my own, use vinegar and oil or Green Goddess from Kraft which has 2 carbs per serving.
It is so nice to go to a restaurant and not have people treat you like your from another planet when you ask for a burger without a bun. I've never had a problem getting one, but it's a special order. One place that has been especially accomodating, for a fast food chain, has been Sonic. They serve it in a box, with the lettuce and other veggies on the bottom. It's not something advertised, they just make their sandwiches anyway you want.
  • Hi NiKKic we meet again! I was also laughing when I read about the Doritos. I can't imagine losing weight with them even if they are less carbs than the original.

I also hope they do something interesting with the Salad Dressings--it is hard to find a good tasting one without some kind of sugar or sugar byproduct.

When they said other condiments-- I am keeping my fingers crossed for a nice low carb ketchup. The one I brought recently in the store warned that eating too much will have a
    laxative effect!
  • i have been hoping for a long time that atkins' approach would result in all mainstream processed foods containing less sugar and more fiber, not just for those trying to lose or maintain, but for everyone.

i think/hope the day will come when more than half the people will choose the lower carb products as the norm, because they are healthier for all of us - especially for our kids. i do think the high sugar content i grew up on will be a thing of the past someday. it was just a really really bad thing to do....
  • Keto has some nacho chips that taste a lot like light crispy Doritos. They were pretty good! But $4.50 for a smallish bag. Hopefully the new Doritos will be cheaper.
  • Oh, I just read that Chilis now has a 14 item carb modified menu, and Schlotzsky's Deli has low carb wraps now. Here is Schlotzsky's menu:

As part of Schlotzsky's High Food IQ(tm) initiative, Schlotzsky's is wrapping and toasting its meats, cheeses and other delicious fillings in a new 7g net carb tortilla. Any of Schlotzsky's dozen-plus sandwiches can be tortilla-wrapped or served on a bed of lettuce as part of customers' low carb plans.

Millions of Americans are now following high protein, low carb, low sugar programs, and they want their low carbs to be "good carbs."

A bit of science: A measure of "good carbs" is the glycemic index, which is the rate that different carbohydrates are transformed into sugars, released into the bloodstream, and absorbed. Complex carbohydrates -- "good carbs" -- have longer absorption rates, reduce hunger and more efficiently fuel the body over time. In contrast, "net carbs" (calculated by subtracting grams of fiber and sugar alcohols from total carbohydrates) absorb faster and cause blood sugar levels to rise. The lower the "net carb" rating, the less likely a food is to produce energy lows and food cravings.

"Our whole wheat and rye breads, and fresh veggies in our soups, sandwiches and salads, are a great source of complex carbohydrates -- the `good carbs,'" said Landers. "And you can reduce `net carbs' by ordering your favorites on the new 7g net carb tortilla -- or simply on Romaine lettuce."

Just a few of the tantalizing "no compromises," High Food IQ choices:

-- Chicken Caesar Salad, 2g net carbs

-- Greek Salad, 6g net carbs

-- Smoked Turkey Chef, 10g net carbs

-- Tuscan Tomato Soup, 10g net carbs

-- Cheesy Chicken Tortilla, 12g net carbs

-- Gourmet Vegetable Beef, 12g net carbs

Those seeking low fat selections have plenty of options, too:

-- Smoked Turkey Breast Sandwich, 1g saturated fat (small), 2g (medium)

    -- Vegetarian Sandwich, 3g (small), 5g (medium)

-- Asian Almond Chicken Wrap, 2g

    -- Zesty Albacore Tuna, 2g

A low carb nutritional guide for Schlotzsky's is available in restaurants and online at www.cooldeli.com.

Schlotzsky's Inc., founded in Austin, Texas, in 1971, through its wholly owned subsidiaries, is a franchisor and operator of restaurants in the fast casual sector. As of Sept. 30, 2003, there were 583 Schlotzsky's(R) Deli restaurants open and operating in 37 states, the District of Columbia and six foreign countries. Here is part of Chili's menu:

    with bleu cheese dressing.
-- Fajita Caesar Salad - Fajita-marinated beef or chicken on romaine
lettuce in Caesar dressing and topped with Parmesan Cheese.
-- Big Mouth Burgers -- Three low-carb variations of Chili's classic
    half-pound burgers -- Oldtimer, Bacon and Mushroom-Swiss -- served
Bunless, with a side of fresh steamed vegetables.
-- Flame-Grilled Ribeye -12 oz. Ribeye steak seasoned with herbs &
garlic, served with fresh steamed vegetables.
-- Monterey Chicken - Grilled chicken breast with BBQ sauce, applewood

-- Knife & Fork Fajitas - Fajita marinated chicken or beef served over
fresh vegetables with pico de gallo, cheese, guacamole and sour cream.

The concept of healthier choices is also extending to the Chili's Kids menu, which has added a grilled chicken platter served with a side of fresh steamed vegetables. Later this spring, Chili's will introduce several new Kids Menu entrees along with a choice of new side items as an alternative to fries -- such as black beans, cinnamon apples, corn on the cob and steamed broccoli.
  • Ladies, thank you for all this wonderful information. I can't wait to go out to eat again. This afternoon we went to Outback and when I told our waitress that I was watching my carbs, she said, "You and a 100 other customers we've had lately. Our boss is thinking about starting a low carb side menu." As the word gets around I think we're going to find more and more of our favorite restaurants meeting our needs without making us feel odd and troublesome! Let's just hope these restaurants don't do it for a short while and then stop it!
  • T.G.I. Fridays has gone ATKINS also
Sorry if this is old news, but I just went to the Atkins website and they are talking about the new Atkins approved selections at T.G.I. Fridays. When you go to www.Fridays.com they have a big ATKINS sign right on their home page.
