What's for lunch?

  • Just taking an informal poll: What do you usually have for lunch on work days? Do you usually go out somewhere, or bring your lunch?

I'm pretty fortunate, diet-wise: I have no choice but to bring my lunch to work. I teach preschool and we can't leave during lunch--so if I want to eat, I bring something!
I usually have heated-up leftovers from dinner the night before, a turkey sandwich on whole wheat bread, or the occasional frozen "diet" meal (Lean Cuisine, Smart Ones, etc). I try not to have those more than once a week, though--they're so high in sodium & not usually even that good!
Sometimes I have a piece of fruit to go with my meal.

How 'bout the rest of you?

  • That is a great question! I work in IT at a small college, and co-workers love to either go out for lunch or eat in the cafeteria. I like to try to bring my own lunch, though, because it is easier to stick plus it saves money! I also like to try to keep things interesting for lunch, so mine really vary. Let's see, this past week I've had venison chili leftovers, homemade vegetable soup, a big bowl of lima beans and string cheese... not all on the same day, of course! If I go out for lunch, I either split a chicken quesadilla with a friend or opt for salad with grilled chicken. I also typically snack mid-morning and late afternoon, mostly on nuts, fruit, Kashi cereal or string cheese.
  • lunch is kinda a tough one, I would like it to be my largest meal of the day but often it isn't. I pack lunch and bring it to school with me, string cheese, a piece of fruit, half a sandwich, pretzels, some nuts, and lots of water. I usually eat all of that throughout the day instead of all at once since breakfast burns off quick, I've tried to start adding more fiber and protien so I will stay full longer hopefully it works.
  • Lunch is pretty easy for me, usually. I work out of my apartment, so I'm able to eat something healthy everyday. I eat turkey sandwiches, salads, vegetables, leftovers, frozen meals, etc. I do need to try to find more filling things, though. I always get hungry in the early afternoon. My problems arise if my husband, who gets off at 1 p.m. wants to go out to eat. He can be so pursuasive, and I always seem to give into him. It's no wonder that since I met him I've gained 65 pounds and am now in the process of trying to take the remaining 40 off. Eesh!
  • Well my parents house is about 10 minutes away from where I work so I usually go there and have whatever is leftover from the night before. I make sure I watch my portion sizes though because usually its not the healthiest (sp?) foods

If I don't go to my parents house I get a salad or a sandwhich from the little sandwhich place next door to my work. They have a great Oriental chicken salad there.
  • I usually eat Lean Cuisine(sp?) meals. Grilled chicken sandwhiches or turkey on wheat are also favorites. I'll bring fruit and non-fat yogart to snack on in the late afternoon so that I'm not hitting the vending machine at school at night.
  • Some of the girls in my office have started a salad bar. We buy the mixed bag of lettuce (we take turns purchasing it) and we all bring other things to add to it: left over chicken, tuna, sunflower seeds, garden items, etc. it's alot of fun to try different combinations and saves time and money. Sometimes someone will bring in a pot of soup and share it!

  • Saw this great tip from Bargain Beauty Secrets by Diane Irons and thought I would post it here since this was about lunch and somehow snacks as well:

"Snack right - A hard candy is only about 20 calories and can last up to twenty minutes. A 400-calorie ice cream cone never lasts more than ten minutes. Try these tasty treats that are less than 150 calories: two Oreo cookies, a McDonald's Ice Cream Cone, a half cup of Italian Ice, a Starbucks Frappuccino Ice Cream Bar, Jell-o with whipped cream, angel food cake with strawberries, a Fudgsicle."

On the hard candy; I can have three jolly ranchers for 1 point....

Usually for lunch I have soup or a sandwich or salad...
  • Because I have two children, my daughter just turned 2 in Aug and my son is almos 9 months, lunch is usually something quick. Like, a peanut butter and jelly sandwich or a chicken sandwich with a piece of fruit. My son has a dairy allergy and since I'm breastfeeding my choices are pretty limited.
