new member just diagnosed with pcos

  • hi
I went to the doctor yesterday because I have been having irregular periods, the doctor told me I have pcos, which certainly explains why I have a weight problem and why the hair on my face seems to be getting worse. I have obviously had this for years but never ever knew about it
I don't know much about this condition, so any help would be much appreciated
The doctor didn't put me on any medication, as I am looking into donor insemination. 3 years ago I had a stillborn baby and I'm worried with pcos I won't be able to get pregnant again, although the doc did say that being pregnant in the past is a good sign for me.
He also didn't think that pcos caused the stillbirth - I had high blood pressure which resulted in a placental abruption.

So I am not being treated for this at the moment.

I now understand why I have not been able to lose weight, I have been walking to work everyday for about a year, and have just out on more and more weight. What can I do to help me lose weight?

I don't know I'm kinda feeling down about this

  • Hi Lee-Ann. the best non-medication ways to combat this is to eat less simple carbs (potatoes, sugar, corn, white flour, etc) and eat more complex carbs. An overall reduction in carbs is a better way as well. That and sustained exercise on a regular basis. Walking to work might be enough, but only if it is done at an exercise pace. Chances are you don't want to get sweaty on the way there, so you probably need more. If you are insulin resistant, weight loss will be very hard without the exercise.
Does your doctor not like metformin for a medication? Many women here take it while trying to conceive. That may help with the weight loss.

Some diet plans you might want to look at are Sugar Busters, South Beach Diet, The Zone, Atkins, or Protein Power. Weight Watchers may also work for you - I'd just stay away from the simple carbs and replace with things like wild rice and whole grain bread.)

    You'll get through this!
