Are there any substitutes for energy drinks?

  • Hi folks, does anyone have any idea about substitutes for energy drinks? I drink an energy drink every day and I am concerned about the sugar and caffeine that is in there. I was wondering if there was anything else I could take instead. I do need the energy to get through the day but at the same time, I don't want to consume that much sugar and caffeine. Any thoughts?
  • It's good that you are questioning your use of energy drinks. There have been a lot of warnings lately about using them. They are dangerous to your health, long term. If your energy is lacking every day that says something about your lifestyle. You're not getting enough sleep, or you are not eating or exercising properly. Our bodies are not made to need energy drinks.

Here is a site I found online that talks about other ways to boost your energy.

  • Personally I am a coffee nut. I will occasionally delve into the energy drink for days that I am lacking sleep. That being said I am usually pretty good at getting 6-8 hours on weekdays. The coffee is not so much a caffeine thing but a yummy low calorie treat that keeps my appetite down for a couple hours. I drink a 40 oz thermos daily, yes 40! So far it has not been causing me health problems, so I will keep on keeping on. Energy drinks are expensive firstly..I am a cheap @$$...but they do contain a bunch of other things which probably aren't great on a daily basis. If you do need an energy drink be sure to purchase a sugar free one to keep off the calories. Try weening yourself off them by replacing it with coffee or tea (watch the sugar and cream for calories). The bad thing about energy drinks is that they come in huge cans, usually. So it makes it hard to proportion them out and ween yourself off. There are some mixes you can buy or those little MIO water flavorings that have caffeine which you could try to replace your energy drink with as well. Try different things and definitely try to get more sleep. If you are getting 7+ hours daily, you may want to see a doctor about why you are tired. Could be an underlying condition.
  • I order my coffee with skim milk and Splenda. I save a ton of calories and I can stick to my calorie limit all day when I drink one.
  • I agree with everything that Wannabehealthy said. Get enough sleep, eat healthy, and exercise. Then you won't need energy drinks.
