Bupropion hcl NOT Wellbutrin

  • Hello. Can anyone taking bupropion hcl 150mg or 300mg trell me if they lost weight while on it? Please specify that it’s the generic version and not the name brand. My pharmacist stated my insurance doesn’t pay for the name brand Wellbutrin so they gave me bupropion until I can get prior authorization from my doctor that I need the name brand. My pharmacist also told me the name brand cost $2000 a month😳. I just started taking the bupropion hcl 1oo mg. 2 days ago. I switch to the 300mg in one week. How long did it take for the medication to help with depression and did you lose weight? If so, how much weight? I’ve been told it can take 4 weeks for my depression to decrease. Your experience on the generic version please. Thanks.
  • Yes, I lost quite a bit of weight during the first six months I was taking it... about 40 pounds. It helped my depression and anxiety pretty quickly, too... probably inside of a week, I'd say.

I am pretty shocked at the price your pharmacist quoted your for the brand name, but I have had a very good experience with the generic. About fifteen years ago when I lived in the lower 48 and had a really good doctor in a city (as opposed to in Interior Alaska), she told me that taking the name brand of most medications is not important at all, and that the generic and brand names are virtually identical. One exception to that is Synthroid. She said to always take Synthroid, and not levothyroxine. (Synthroid is a thyroid medication, for those who do not know)
