Strength Training for fat girls

  • Ok, I lost 50 lbs doing absolutely nothing. So ...my body isn't very strong....I wanna burn fat, but I HATE EXERCISE, I HATE CARDIO.....I have no pool....I walk on the treadmill, (which is a broken one) for 3/4 mile @ 2.4mpg (any faster and ya fall off)

I do arm exercises to strengthen my biceps triceps and shoulders with 3 lbs weights...that workout lasts about 12 min

The thing is...I have YET to see a strength training workout, meant for Fat Girls....you know, those of us with the belly.

What I see are these "beginner" strength training workouts where they have you doing lunges, squats, pushups, planks, etc, with weights...

Ok first off, I can't do a pushup, a lunge, a squat, a plank, WITHOUT weights, how am I supposed to do them WITH weights....

Anyone know of any videos, workouts youtube videos, etc that might be more realistic to people that aren't already "hardbodied beginners".....its very frustrating watching skinny women exercise..as they barely break a sweat, making it look SOOOO easy and telling you Oh my , i can really feel the burn on that one...
  • Hi there! I can relate! i can't help you with videos as I haven't found anything that accommodates with my own fitness level, but I do love my bosu ball which gives me much needed cushion for my lower back. Hopefully we will find someone on this forum with recommendations!
  • Why not try working up to the videos? Like modified push ups, planks for just 10 second, squats. It doesn't matter if you can't do it perfectly at first, you will get there. You could also try increasing the 3lbs to 5lbs and increase the incline on the treadmill- you will get a killer burn!

I always find work out videos so annoying. Even when I was at my fittest and playing competitive sports, I had trouble keeping up with the videos and had to pause them every 5 seconds. I can't imagine how I would survive them now! youre not alone!
  • I'd recommend you just walk. I personally despise treadmills so I did my walking outside. Working up slowly until you walk a couple miles and a nice brisk pace every day. I've honestly found that to be the best exercise for weight loss (I previously lost 65lbs). Sure, I prefer doing something fun like powerlifting, but just straight up walking is really effective.
  • I'm a fat girl and can do all of those things, I take personal offense to saying that fat girls with bellies can't. The only person who can't are those that say they can't. I workout with 80 year old women and women who have had complete knee replacements and we still kill it on the mat every day.

Please think more of yourself. You can do whatever you set your mind to doing. Good luck. You can find strength training videos on YouTube that you don't need weights for. Just keep searching different terms. There are so many videos out there. And even ones that you can do sitting down (my mom does those)...
  • If it's not fun, I'm not doing it.

If you have kids, put them to bed, fire up Youtube and twerk and dance away until you're exhausted. I can't dance. I have no sense of rhythm. I still flop around in the privacy of my home like a dying chicken. Cardio is cardio, regardless of how you get it in. I hate exercise...but I don't mind that.

When I'm you're size, I'm finding a pole dancing class. I'd do it now, but I'm heavy enough I'd have concerns about the weight limit on the poles. I'm sure if I learn something cool, whoever I'm dating at that point will appreciate it.

You need to find your version of "fun".
  • ^ LOVE it, S'nella! LOVE IT!

...Dance like no one is watching....Laugh like you've never cried...Play like you've never lost...
  • I have been in a place mentally where I thought if I couldn't do the workouts perfectly or as many times, that I thought that meant I couldn't do the workouts. The truth is if you keep moving and keep trying then you will get there. As long as you are moving you are doing something. And when you do finally feel like you have executed a plank (even if just for 10 seconds) you can be so proud. And you don't have to use weights to feel the burn.

Some recommendations I would have for you though, because maybe you just don't enjoy the videos you see?

    - Walking is GREAT! Keep it up. Walk outside maybe? That is way more entertaining. If you are worried about what people may think of you when they see you, well, you gotta start practicing not worrying about that, because even when you reach your goal people will judge. But now and then, not as many people are watching as you think. You aren't that important I mean that in a nice way, haha.

    - Swimming is a very good workout and creates body resistance.

-Kickboxing is a great workout and incorporates a lot of muscle training. Find an old Tae Bo video (might be dating myself here). Right now I am confined to a wheel chair and my regimen is to do 50 Air punches (just punching fists into the air), 50 jabs to each side, and arm circles. I don't use any weights, but it feels good. I don't know if I'm getting a lot of results but it feels good so I'm sticking with it.

Keep your head up. It is good you are wanting to branch out and figure stuff out. Don't be afraid to try things. It will give you a bench mark for when you are further along your journey and can do workouts more effectively.

"Please think more of yourself" now that is some advice that is actually useful!! Yea baby!!!!

I'm totally with her on this. At my gym where I take classes the fitness teachers all look like real women. The Zumba teacher, the Pilates and yoga teachers, even the kickboxing trainer all look real. Fit, but real. And there are people in the classes half my size that can do all the exercises better than the trainers and some who can't do it at all. I understand the need to see a body that is more like yours rather than the thin people in workout videos but you gotta get out in the real world to see them like at a gym. The point of these classes is not to be able to do them. If you can do then all perfectly then you're in a class that is too easy for you. Exercise is meant to challenge you and you should see results over time. That's the beauty of it.
  • I would check if you can find a weight lifting class at a gym nearby. I am incredibly terrible at body weight exercises for similar reasons as you- I just don't have the muscle to do some exercises the way they were intended to work, and I feel like I'm not working the right muscles. There is a weight class at my gym, though, where body weight was way less of a factor, and I really enjoy it. The instructor is a woman with a bit of a belly too, so weight lifting is definitely doable with one.

The other thing to consider is that just because you can't do the exercise with weights doesn't mean it's not valuable to do it without them. You just don't need extra weights, since you're carrying them all the time.
  • I agree with fat2fitgirl. I could do those exercises back in 2011 when I was 240 lbs, just not as easily as I can do them now. It's not supposed to be too easy though because you're not getting a lot out of the workout if it is. I couldn't jog in place as long or lift my legs as many times or do as many sit-ups, but I got fitter the more I did them even though I was still obese.

Now, as for beginner level toning workouts...
My workout videos mainly consist of old VHS tapes my mom already had at the house. I don't want to go to the gym, they cost me nothing, and they are still effective.

There's an old Tony Little tape I do to with 5 and 8lb weights, where basically you go as long as you can with the movements during a time period. For example it may be 2 minutes of squats but if you're a beginner you might try to stick it out for at least 60 seconds. I haven't found this video on youtube but I did find what looks like a newer version of it https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hikiDDq-zbg
and an older video that has toning workouts but without weights https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0ODSqPQTpr0

There's an old Denise Austin non-aerobic toning workout tape with no weights that I do and that one IS on youtube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dWeSUxIZ9YY

My mom had these Leslie Sansone walk aerobics VHS tapes 1, 2, and 3 mile, that came with two 2 lb water weighted balls. Over time I've upped my weights to 5 lbs and 8 lbs so I get more out of it because the aerobics part is fairly low impact, especially since I've done it so much. I've also learned that there are certain ways to walk and raise your arms to make it a harder movement than the way they do it in the videos and that helps for the times I don't feel like using weights or want to get even more out of the weights. These videos were removed from youtube however there are some newer weighted walk videos that are just her by herself like this 2 mile https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l5uilZNoaAU
    and 3 mile https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Yr41_8QOTF8
If the default weights are too light and the workout is too easy, just use heavier weights.
  • I started off doing 20 lbs deadlifts... I JUST came back from the gym and did 90! My trainer was so happy for me. And here I am, fattest girl in the class. Heck yeah!!
