weight less after thyroidectomy --Hoping for positive stories

  • Hi everyone...I feel really foolish to double post, I originally made a post in the general section unaware there was a sub forum specifically for my concerns and questions about endo. I apologize and I hope it won't upset the mods. I'm just a little desperate for some positive stories.

I've been googling for feel-food/motivational weight loss stories from individuals who are in a similar boat as myself. I had my thyroid removed 7 months ago due to cancer. Search results are so congested with the struggle of weight loss, any successful stories are lost in the internet abyss.

So far, I've only gained 10 pounds which isn't TOO horrible for 7 months, but I can definitely see the numbers creeping if I don't stay vigilant. I currently weight 275lb/ 19.6 stones and I'm terrified I'll never know what it feels to be in a healthy range.

Has anyone had success losing weight without sacrificing soy, dairy or rice/bread (but in very moderate amounts)?
  • well, I still have my thyroid....TH levels are low sometimes....but I can relate to stubborn weight loss, as can many others on here. I don't know if members of the support group you're looking for will be online anytime soon, but I'm sure you can find other great folks to cheer you along.
  • Thanks It's been a while since I've checked back in but I'm sure I'll find a lot of great information here.
  • Hi! I just had my third thyroid biopsy. I suspect my thyroid's days are numbered. I haven't even let myself google whether there's any impact on weight loss. I struggle enough as it is. I was on synthroid for years and during those years I could eat anything I wanted. I called it a wonder drug. But since menopause I have gained. I'm working hard and have lost 27 1/2 pounds since January 1. I'd like to keep on losing and not get derailed by physical issues!
  • It can be done, I have been sans thyroid for 20 years. I have lost weight and of late, gaining has been easier. It takes work and exercise. Also, if you lee's aren't quite right yet, this can lead to weight increase. Are you on synthroid or generic? I am one of those that the generic wreaks havoc with and I become horribly hypo.

Start working on those pounds and keep persevering and it will start to move on off. Good luck!
  • I just had mine removed. I am still terrified I am going to gain weight.
