From three 48 ounce sodas a day to lower carb - any encouragement or success stories?

  • I have been a soda fanatic and it has gotten worse and worse. Basically, I would drink about three 48 ounce sodas a day (130 carbs each). I also ate junk food, fast food, and starches with every meal.

Since stopping soda is had for me to stick with, i would really love any encouraging comments or stories - especially from people who have given up soda and lost weight. I have been doing this a week and so far my pants are definitely looser. But I don't have a scale at the moment. I did get weighed at the doctor a couple of weeks ago and go back in two months. I want to see how much i can lose by then.

Anyone lost a lot by giving up soda? I have upped my protein and fat and lowered carbs in my food as well. I am not eating any grain, rice, potatoes, etc. Getting carbs only from vegetables. Eating a lot of eggs and chicken.

Can anyone give me any success stories or encouragement?

    Thank you!
  • Well, I'm not a 'success' story yet. But, many years ago I exchanged regular Coke for diet. And I was addicted to both. I drank Diet Coke all day. Since starting a low carb diet a couple of months ago, i literally cannot stand the taste of Diet Coke. It wasn't even a conscious choice. Now I drink a ton of water and unsweetened tea with a little Splenda.

About once a week I might have a Fresca, but that is it.

    I'm down 30lbs in those 2 1/2 months.
  • That is awesome!
30 pounds in 2.5 months is amazing!!!

Have you tried replacing some of your soda with seltzer water? Seltzer is essentially carbonated water, without the added calories, sugars, and fats that sodas contain. They come in all sorts of natural flavors too.
  • I used to be a drinker of Pepsi. I drank a 12-pak every other day! That's a lotta sweet stuff. That was four years ago when I went low carb and between giving up soda and going low carb, I dropped 35 pounds in 4 months. I cannot even stand the taste of a regular sugared soda anymore. But, I do have my one diet pepsi in the mornings Monday-Friday. Everything else is tea sweetened with Stevia and water. You can do it!!!!!
  • Once upon a time, as I was walking down the hallway of my DS's elementary school, I encountered a school employee I had not seen in some time..."Haven't seen you in a while...Wow! Have you lost weight? You look Great!"..."Yes I have"..."Please tell... what was your secret?" ...."I gave up soda"....she must've lost 20lb over the summer....made me wish I drank soda, 'cause I'd sure give it up for that kinda success!

I second the seltzer water idea (though you'd be adding lotsa salt)....Think about why you drink soda...is it the bubbles? the caffeine? the ritual/having something in your hand? a need to get out of your office chair and visit the soda machine? Then think about how you can make a substitute or transition....seltzer, tea, coffee, fancy, watered-down juices, mio water....

Just don't solve one problem with another problem!
  • YKW? To the best of my recollection, that is the ONLY time I have made comments to someone regarding their size. I did not know that person very well at all; perhaps that is why it is still a strong memory. Or perhaps passing this story along to you was destiny....Go forth and conquer! (the soda)
