In Ketosis but no weightloss

  • I have successfully lost a lot of weight doing ideal protein (over 80 pounds). I was down to 127 pounds and maintaining. Then, life happened, and I gained 5 pounds. I decided to go back into phase 1 to lose the pounds I had gained. Well, I am in ketosis according to my purple ketostix. However, I am not losing any weight. I am working out 5-6 days a week. Could the working out be affecting my weightloss? I am so confused on how I can be in ketosis and not losing! Please help! Thanks!
  • Are you adding an extra packet on days you exercise? If not, you should. Also, the closer you are to goal, which it seems like you are only 5# above your goal weight, the harder it is to lose. Your body just may be taking a while to drop those 5#. Also, you may want to try bootcamp for a few days (no restricted items).
  • I haven't been adding an extra packet! I hate to give up my restricted item, but I will definitely try that even though just the idea breaks my heart... Lol! So, do you think the exercise is putting my body into starvation mode or do you think it's okay to keep up the intense exercise?
  • Not sure if this will help, but I am within 5 pounds of goal and let me tell you- it is TOUGH to lose. Very slow going. I have only been on IP for (almost) 4 weeks, but the two times I did even a very light workout I was up about 2 lbs the next day and could not get my blood sugar under control.
  • Ketostix are worthless
Have you been working out for awhile & maintaining? Is there any possibility that it's muscle?
That said, if you are doing heavy workouts 5 - 6 days a week and only consuming 700 - 950 calories, the body is designed to hold onto whatever it can in starvation mode. Even worse, you may be losing muscle mass that could potentially effect your workouts in the long run.
  • Hysteria is right, Ideal Protein says " Exercising while on the Ideal Protein diet can potentially cause muscle loss due to gluconeogensis (something we want to avoid!), so it is not recommended at all during the first 3 weeks and then lightly after that." And they mean lightly, something that doesn't really get your heart rate up.
